The PS5 Pro is the stronger graphics option, but it is not automatically the better buy. Its advantages depend on whether the games you play have Pro enhancements, whether your display can show the improvements you want, and whether the added cost—including a separate disc drive if you use physical games—makes sense for you.
What is the difference between PS5 and PS5 Pro?
The Pro adds upgraded graphics hardware, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, and more advanced ray tracing. Those features can improve image detail, frame rates, or both in supported games. A standard PS5 remains capable of playing PS5 games; the Pro is an enhanced option, not a separate game library.

Sony’s September 2024 launch announcement said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and memory that is 28% faster than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster rendering. These are Sony’s hardware and capability comparisons, not independently measured gains guaranteed in every game. Sony also notes that Pro enhancements are available only in select games and vary by title. Sony’s launch announcement
How do graphics and performance compare in games?
Image quality and PSSR
PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology. It is intended to add image detail, but the result depends on how a game implements it and which graphics settings or modes you select. A Pro badge alone does not tell you exactly how much sharper a particular game will look.
#1 Best Overall
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Frame rates and ray tracing
Sony says supported games can combine ray tracing, 4K output, and frame rates up to 60 or 120 fps on suitable displays. Treat that as a capability for compatible games, not a promise that every title will run at those settings. Depending on the game, an enhanced mode may emphasize resolution, ray tracing, or smoother performance instead of maximizing all three at once. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page
Game support and PS4 titles
Sony’s UK feature page listed more than 100 PS5 titles enhanced for Pro when accessed on October 9, 2026; the count can change. The US Pro page said the console can play more than 8,500 PS4 games and that Game Boost improves frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games. Compatibility does not mean every PS4 game receives a Pro-specific boost, and benefits differ by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page

Included storage
Sony’s UK Pro listing showed a 2TB SSD, while its US standard PS5 listing showed a 1TB configuration; both listings were accessed October 9, 2026. These are regional listed configurations, not a guarantee for every model or revision. Check the exact console listing in your region before buying. UK PS5 Pro listing · US PS5 buy page

The PS5 Pro is digital-only out of the box. If you play discs, add the cost of Sony’s separately sold compatible Disc Drive to your comparison. Pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection. Sony’s PS5 buy page

Compatibility with older PS5 accessories
Sony’s compatibility guide lists the compatible Disc Drive and vertical stand as supported for Pro, with the stand sold separately. Older PS5 covers and the older PS5 base do not fit. Check the guide if you plan to reuse accessories. PS5 Pro compatibility guide

There is no universal value verdict: the answer depends on your games, display, local current prices, and—if you use discs—the added drive cost. Sony’s $699.99 US price was the Pro’s announced launch MSRP in September 2024, not a current price quote. The launch announcement also listed £699.99, €799.99, and ¥119,980; those are historical launch prices in their respective currencies, not today’s regional prices. Consider Pro if
- Your most-played games have Pro-enhanced modes whose specific improvements matter to you.
- Your display supports the resolution or refresh-rate features you want to use.
- The current price premium is acceptable after accounting for any separately needed Disc Drive.
Keep or choose the standard PS5 if
- Your current console and display already meet your needs.
- Your favorite games offer little improvement that you would notice or value.
- The price difference, plus any required drive, is hard to justify for the graphics gains you expect.
How to judge the upgrade for your own games
- Make a short list of games you play most. Look for each game’s PS5 Pro enhancement and read what its mode changes rather than relying on the Pro label alone.
- Identify the improvement you care about. Decide whether sharper image quality, ray tracing, steadier performance, or a higher frame rate matters most to you.
- Check your display. Confirm it supports the output modes you want; a feature that your screen cannot show may have limited value for your setup.
- Compare the full local cost. Use current prices for the console and, if needed, the compatible Disc Drive. Include any trade-in value only if you have a real offer.
- Compare that cost with what you would gain. If your games, screen, and budget line up with the Pro’s enhancements, the upgrade may be worthwhile; otherwise the standard PS5 remains the more sensible choice.
