For most U.S. buyers who want to play PS5 games at the lowest cost, the standard PS5 is the better value. Sony’s recommended U.S. prices, effective April 2, 2026, put it at $649.99—$250 below the PS5 Pro. The Pro can be worth the premium if you play titles that support its image-quality and performance upgrades, use a compatible display, and value those improvements enough to pay more.
What the PS5 Pro costs compared with PS5
Sony’s published U.S. recommended retail prices below took effect April 2, 2026. They are MSRP figures, not live retailer quotes; check current local offers before buying.

| Console | U.S. recommended price | Difference from PS5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | $649.99 | PS5 Pro is $250 more |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | PS5 Pro is $300 more |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | — |
The standard PS5 and Digital Edition are distinct models, so be clear which one you are comparing: the Pro costs $250 more than the standard PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition. Sony announced the global price changes on March 27, 2026, citing “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Sony’s price announcement lists updated recommended prices for the U.K., Europe and Japan as well; regional pricing and retailer offers vary.

What the Pro adds
Sony positions the PS5 Pro around three upgrades: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame rates. In compatible games and with a suitable display, Sony says the console can deliver 60 fps or up to 120 fps with 4K output, ray tracing and PSSR. These are platform claims, not a promise that every game will provide all those features. Sony notes that results vary by title on its PS5 Pro product page.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
PSSR and supported games
Sony describes PSSR as an AI library that analyzes game images as it upscales them. An upgraded version began rolling out in a system software update announced March 16, 2026; Sony says it improves image stability and detail in supported titles. The company says the enhanced algorithm and neural network grew out of its Project Amethyst partnership with AMD.
Sony’s examples of games with upgraded PSSR support include Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Crimson Desert, Alan Wake 2, Control, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk 2077. Support can change and is specific to each game. Check Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement and the game’s own product information for current details.
Counts of enhanced games need context. The PS5 Pro product page lists over 100 enhanced PS5 titles. Separately, Lead Architect Mark Cerny said on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro. The first is a broader enhanced-game count; the second is Sony’s dated, PSSR-specific figure—not an independent audit or a current total.

Compatibility and costs beyond the console
If you need physical-disc support, Sony confirms that a disc drive with cover is compatible with PS5 Pro. Do not assume it comes in a particular package: the included contents of every current regional bundle are not established here, so verify the exact model and retailer listing before comparing totals.
Sony’s PS5 Pro compatibility guide also says horizontal stand feet are compatible. The listed CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 PS5 console covers and the PS5 console base are not. Factor in any accessory you need rather than comparing console prices alone.
Which console is the better value for you?
Choose the standard PS5 if
- Keeping the purchase price down matters more than the Pro’s visual and performance upgrades.
- You want broad access to PS5 games and do not need the specific enhancements available in supported titles.
- The games you play most are not among the Pro-enhanced titles, or you would not notice or value the difference enough to justify the premium.
Choose the PS5 Pro if
- You regularly play games with Pro-specific enhancements and care about sharper image quality, ray tracing, or higher or steadier frame rates.
- Your display and preferred setup can make use of the supported features.
- You have checked the games you play and judge their upgrades worth paying the additional amount over the model you would otherwise buy.
There is no universal performance difference to apply to every game, and the available evidence here does not establish a like-for-like independent benchmark. Treat the decision as a game-by-game value judgment: check support for your favorites, consider your display and accessory needs, then compare the actual prices available in your region.
