To reduce Googlebot activity during an urgent overload, Google recommends temporarily returning HTTP 500, 503, or 429 responses to crawl requests; this is a short-term emergency measure, not a lasting rate limit. For broader traffic spikes, protect the application origin with caching, carefully tuned WAF or rate limits, restricted direct access, monitoring, and—where the architecture supports it—load distribution or added capacity. First identify which requests are causing the load: a Googlebot crawl-rate change will not control other bots or ordinary visitors.
Find out what is creating the load
Before changing crawl or security settings, examine server access logs and Google Search Console’s Crawl Stats. Look at request rate, user agent, URL path, response status, and whether requests are reaching and stressing the origin. Crawl Stats can help assess Google’s crawl activity and host availability; logs show which paths and request patterns are involved. See Google’s Crawl Stats report documentation.

Check for crawl-demand multipliers such as faceted navigation, filters, sorting options, or date calendars. A sudden increase may also coincide with newly exposed site sections or Dynamic Search Ad targets. Do not treat a user-agent string alone as proof that a request came from Google; the sources cited here do not provide a Googlebot IP-verification procedure, so avoid basing important policy decisions on an unverified label.

Googlebot’s behavior and search implications differ from those of other crawlers, bots, and visitors. Google’s guidance describes its aim this way: “Google wants to crawl your site without overwhelming your servers.” That design goal is not a guarantee against overload. Google Search Central’s crawl budget guidance explains that crawl capacity responds to host health: slower responses, server errors, and rate-limiting signals such as HTTP 429 can reduce crawl activity.

Choose the control that matches the problem
| Control | Best use | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary HTTP 500, 503, or 429 for Googlebot | Urgent, short-term reduction in Google crawl activity | Affects crawl activity across the hostname, not just selected URLs. Prolonged errors can harm Search visibility. A 503 or 429 can include Retry-After. Google’s crawl-rate reduction guidance. |
| robots.txt | Excluding content or resources from crawling | Not a temporary rate limiter. Blocking URLs can also prevent Google systems from processing them. Google’s robots.txt documentation. |
| CDN caching and origin access restriction | Serving reusable content at the edge and reducing requests that reach the application | Effectiveness depends on cacheability and correct origin access configuration. Cloudflare’s origin protection guidance. |
| WAF or rate-based rules | Controlling excessive rates or protecting specific endpoints | Thresholds and grouping need tuning to avoid blocking legitimate traffic. Cloudflare rate-limiting documentation and AWS WAF rate-based rules documentation. |
| Waiting room, load balancing, or autoscaling | Managing demand at selected endpoints or distributing capacity | Requires a compatible service and architecture; adding capacity does not by itself identify abusive traffic. If Googlebot is causing an urgent overload
For a short-lived incident, Google documents responding to crawl requests with HTTP 500, 503, or 429 rather than 200. Google says its crawlers reduce crawl activity when they encounter significant numbers of these responses and increase it as errors subside. The measure is broad: it affects crawl rate across the hostname rather than only a chosen URL. For 503 or 429, a Retry-After header can tell crawlers when to try again. Follow Google’s guidance on reducing crawl rate.
Use these responses only as emergency relief. Google warns that keeping 503 or 429 in place for longer than roughly one to two days can negatively affect Search; repeated availability errors can lead to URLs being dropped from the index. Restore normal responses when the load subsides, then watch crawler activity and host health. If serving errors is not feasible, Google describes an exceptional request to specify an optimal crawl rate, but evaluation may take several days, so it is not immediate incident response.

Use robots.txt to exclude content, not to impose a crawl interval
Use robots.txt when you want to tell crawlers not to fetch particular content or resources. It does not protect an overloaded server from a flood of requests, and it is not Google’s recommended way to temporarily move crawl capacity elsewhere. Google’s non-standard crawl-delay directive is not processed by Googlebot. Blocking important URLs can also limit Google’s ability to process them, so consider the indexing and discovery consequences before adding exclusions. See Google’s robots.txt guide and its crawl budget guidance.

Reduce avoidable requests with caching
A CDN can serve cacheable content from edge locations instead of sending every request to the application origin. Restricting direct access to the origin can also prevent clients from bypassing the edge layer. These controls depend on suitable cache rules and correct origin configuration; they do not make a site immune to a spike. Cloudflare outlines these measures, along with origin monitoring and traffic distribution, in its origin protection guidance.

Apply rate limits to costly or vulnerable endpoints
Where possible, scope WAF or rate-based rules to a request class or endpoint rather than applying a blunt limit to all traffic. Cloudflare documents configurable match conditions and a default HTTP 429 response for its rate-limiting rules. AWS WAF supports rules that block sources exceeding configured thresholds. Choose thresholds from observed traffic and the endpoint’s capacity; there is no universally safe requests-per-second figure.
Consider how requests are grouped. A limit keyed to a shared public IP may combine many legitimate people behind the same NAT, while a legitimate event surge may resemble abusive behavior. Review the grouping key and test its effect to reduce false positives. Cloudflare also advises reviewing DDoS settings when large legitimate spikes are expected; see its HTTP DDoS protection documentation.

Distribute demand or increase capacity when appropriate
A waiting room can control demand for selected endpoints, while load balancing can distribute requests across available capacity. For AWS-hosted applications, AWS describes using load balancers with overprovisioned or automatically scaled EC2 instances to handle sudden surges, including flash crowds. Scaling can help availability, but it works best alongside efficient origin handling and request filtering; it does not distinguish malicious requests from legitimate ones. See AWS’s demand-planning guidance.

Why a universal crawl-rate setting does not exist
Googlebot adapts crawl capacity to the health of each host, and vendor WAF thresholds are configurable to traffic and application needs. Google’s documentation says most sites should not be accessed by Googlebot more than once every few seconds on average, while noting that short apparent bursts can occur because of delays. That description is not a site-wide capacity target or a recommended requests-per-second limit for your server. Set controls from your own logs, endpoint costs, and observed capacity, then adjust them against errors, latency, and false positives. See Google’s crawl budget guidance.
