PS5 Pro vs PS5: Performance, Features, and Who Should Upgrade

PS5 Pro adds PSSR, more graphics headroom, advanced ray tracing and a 2TB SSD. Find out when its game-specific upgrades make it worth leaving your PS5 behind.

PS5 Pro is a faster, disc-less PS5 with a 2TB SSD, AI-assisted upscaling and more advanced ray tracing. It is most worth considering if you play games with PS5 Pro enhancements, care about sharper graphics or higher frame rates, and have a display that can show the difference. If your current PS5 meets your needs, your games make little use of Pro features, or the added cost is hard to justify, upgrading is less compelling.

What is different between PS5 Pro and PS5?

The PS5 Pro is an upgraded model in the PS5 family, not a new generation with a separate game library. Sony says it has more graphics processing capacity, faster memory, AI-assisted image upscaling and more advanced ray tracing. It also has 2TB of built-in storage and supports Wi-Fi 7 in territories where the feature is available. The trade-offs to note are that it does not include a disc drive and that its visual and performance advantages depend on the game.

Feature PS5 Pro What it means for an upgrade
Graphics hardware Sony said the Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5. More graphics headroom, but not a universal percentage increase in game performance.
Memory Sony said memory is 28% faster than the then-current PS5. A platform specification, not a guarantee of a particular improvement in a game.
Image upscaling PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-assisted upscaling feature. Can improve image clarity in games that implement it.
Ray tracing More advanced ray-tracing hardware. Enhanced reflections and refractions are available only in games that support them.
Built-in storage 2TB SSD. More room for installed games than a smaller-capacity console, though storage alone may not justify an upgrade.
Optical disc drive Not included; a compatible PS5 Disc Drive is sold separately. Physical-game and UHD Blu-ray users should include the drive in their total cost.
Wireless networking Wi-Fi 7 support where available. Taking advantage of it requires a compatible router and network; it does not promise better speeds or latency in every setup.

Sony’s September 2024 announcement says the Pro can render gameplay up to 45% faster than the then-current PS5. “Up to” matters: this is Sony’s platform claim, not a result every game will achieve. Sony also described ray-tracing performance as more than twice as fast, and sometimes up to three times as fast, as the then-current PS5. Those figures describe the hardware capability Sony advertised; the result depends on how each game uses the hardware. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement explains the claims and the game-by-game qualification.

How do PSSR, ray tracing and frame rates affect games?

PSSR and image clarity

PSSR uses machine-learning-based upscaling to improve image clarity. In a game that supports it, the technique can help deliver a sharper-looking image without requiring the console to render every pixel at full output resolution. PSSR is not a universal system-wide switch that makes every game look better: developers must implement Pro features in their titles.

PlayStation 5 Pro with 2TB SSD Storage, Console Only - PS5 Pro Gaming System, White (Renewed)
  • Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
  • Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
  • Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

Ray tracing and visual effects

Ray tracing simulates how light interacts with a scene to produce effects such as reflections and refractions. Sony says the Pro has hardware for more advanced ray tracing, but whether that changes a particular game’s visuals depends on that game’s Pro support.

Frame rates and game modes

Sony promotes higher and more consistent frame rates on compatible games. The practical result varies by title and by the graphics mode the player selects. Check the game’s stated PS5 Pro enhancements and its resolution and performance options rather than assuming the console will raise every game to a specific frame rate. A compatible display is also needed to see the benefit of higher-resolution or higher-refresh output.

Which games benefit from PS5 Pro?

PlayStation’s product page listed more than 100 PS5 titles with Pro enhancements when reviewed on October 4, 2026; the catalog can change. Check PlayStation’s current PS5 Pro features and enhanced-game information for the titles you actually play. Sony says features vary by game, so the presence of a title in the enhanced catalog does not by itself tell you which improvements it offers.

The Pro also plays PS5 games and, according to Sony, more than 8,500 PS4 games. Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS4 and PS5 games, but that is not a promise that every backward-compatible game will improve. Compatibility means a game can be played; it does not mean it receives PSSR, enhanced ray tracing or a specific frame-rate increase.

Should you upgrade from PS5 to PS5 Pro?

The upgrade is easier to justify if…

  • You regularly play several games that have PS5 Pro enhancements, and those enhancements matter to you.
  • You prefer image quality, visual effects or higher and steadier frame rates over keeping the cost of your current setup as low as possible.
  • You have a 4K or high-refresh display capable of showing the improvements you want.
  • You want the Pro’s 2TB of built-in storage and would make meaningful use of the extra space.

Keeping your PS5 makes sense if…

  • You are satisfied with how your current console runs the games you play.
  • Your regular games do not have Pro enhancements you value, or you would not notice the difference on your display.
  • The total cost of the upgrade is not worthwhile to you.

For a specific decision, check support for your most-played titles first, then compare the current local prices of the PS5 Pro and the PS5 model you would otherwise buy. Sony’s US launch MSRP was $699.99 when the Pro launched on November 7, 2024; that is historical context, not a current price quote. Sony’s launch release records that price and the launch specifications.

What should PS5 disc owners and accessory users know?

The PS5 Pro is disc-less. If you own physical PS5 or PS4 games, or use UHD Blu-ray discs, factor the separately sold compatible PS5 Disc Drive into the purchase. Sony also says existing PS5 accessories including PS VR2 and PlayStation Portal are compatible. PlayStation’s launch post describes the optional drive and accessory compatibility.

Wi-Fi 7 is useful only if it is supported in your territory and your router and network can use it. It is not, by itself, a reason to expect faster downloads or lower online-game latency in every home. For online play, the result depends on the whole network connection, not just the console’s wireless standard.
