Choose the base PS5 if you want the lower-cost route into the PS5 library or need a disc drive included; choose PS5 Pro if your favorite games support its enhancements and you value sharper visuals or smoother performance enough to pay more. In Sony’s US store listings accessed October 3, 2026, the Pro costs $899, compared with $649 for the disc PS5 and $599 for the Digital Edition. Pro improvements are limited to selected games, and its disc drive is sold separately.

The Pro is $250 more than the disc PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition at those listed prices. Published storage capacities are nominal; some space is reserved for system functions, so usable capacity is lower. Sony’s $699.99 US launch MSRP for the Pro, announced in 2024, is historical and is not its current listed price. Sony PS5 consoles · PlayStation Direct consoles
What PS5 Pro improves—and what it doesn’t
Sony highlights three Pro features: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), optimized console performance, and advanced ray tracing. Together, these are intended to improve image quality and performance in supported games. Sony says compatible titles can offer 60 fps or up to 120 fps alongside ray tracing and PSSR-enhanced 4K output, but results depend on the game and display conditions; these are not guarantees for every title or setup. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Sony’s US feature page listed over 100 PS5 titles enhanced for PS5 Pro when accessed October 3, 2026. That catalogue count can change. Sony says features are available only in selected PS5 games and vary by title, so check the specific games you play rather than assuming all games receive the same uplift. Check your games and display
- Look up your most-played games on Sony’s Pro-enhanced list and note which ones have features you would actually use.
- Consider whether you prefer higher image quality, smoother frame rates, or a balance; a game’s available modes differ by title.
- Check your display’s resolution and refresh-rate capabilities before paying extra for features your setup may not show.
Disc users should compare the full cost
The base disc PS5 includes a drive. PS5 Pro is sold without one; Sony’s removable Disc Drive is compatible with the Pro and sold separately. Sony says the accessory plays PS5 and supported PS4 physical game discs, as well as 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD discs. Internet access is required to pair it during setup. If you use discs, compare the Pro plus drive against the base disc model, and verify the accessory and console model before buying. Sony Disc Drive information
Game compatibility and storage
Sony says PS5 Pro plays all PS5 games and over 8,500 PS4 games. Its US store listing also notes a small number of incompatible PS4 games, so do not assume every PS4 title works. The Pro uses the DualSense wireless controller. Sony PS5 Pro store listing

The Pro’s listed 2 TB capacity is a built-in advantage over the 1 TB base disc model and 825 GB Digital Edition. It may suit a large installed library, though listed capacity is not the same as space available for games after system use.

Choose the base disc PS5 if…
- You want access to the PS5 library without paying for Pro-specific enhancements.
- You buy, borrow, or already own physical game discs, or want a built-in drive for supported disc media.
- The $649 US Sony direct-store listing is a better fit than the Pro’s $899 price.
Choose the PS5 Digital Edition if…
- You buy and download games digitally and want the lowest listed price among these configurations.
- Its 825 GB nominal storage meets your needs.
- You understand that it is digital-only as sold. Sony says a separate drive can be added to specified slim Digital Edition model groups; check your exact model before purchasing an accessory. Sony Disc Drive compatibility
Choose PS5 Pro if…
- Your favorite games appear on Sony’s Pro-enhanced list, and their image or performance improvements matter to you.
- Your display and preferences make those improvements worthwhile.
- You are comfortable with the current $899 US direct-store listing and the possibility of buying a separate drive if you use discs.
- The 2 TB nominal built-in storage is useful for your installed library.
A quick decision rule
Start with the games you play, not the Pro’s feature list: confirm their enhancement support, then weigh the display you use, the current price difference, storage, and physical media. If Pro-specific gains do not matter for your games—or the premium does not fit your budget—the base model remains the more economical way to play PS5 games. If those gains do matter and the total cost works for you, the Pro is the more capable option for supported titles.
