It is a harder buy if a standard PS5 already meets your needs—especially if you also need to purchase the Pro’s separately sold disc drive. Sony says enhancements are available only in select games and vary by title.

For the US market, Sony’s same announcement lists the standard PS5 at $649.99 and the PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99. That makes the Pro’s MSRP $250 higher than the standard disc-edition PS5 and $300 higher than the Digital Edition, before tax or accessories. Those differences use Sony’s US prices and should not be applied to other regions.

What does the extra money buy?
The PS5 Pro’s hardware is designed to improve image quality and performance in supported games. In its September 2024 launch announcement, Sony said the Pro has a GPU with 67% more Compute Units than the then-current PS5, memory that is 28% faster, and rendering that is “up to 45 percent faster.” These are Sony’s hardware and performance claims; “up to” is a maximum, not a guaranteed improvement in every game.
Sony also highlights advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its machine-learning-based upscaling technology. The system has a 2TB SSD. It supports Wi-Fi 7 in territories where that standard is supported.
The practical result depends on the game. Some enhanced titles may offer sharper image quality, improved ray tracing, higher frame rates, or a choice between visual and performance modes. Sony’s US product listing advertises up to 120fps with 4K output, but that is a console capability claim, not a promise that every game runs at that frame rate or resolution.
Enhancements are selective, not universal
Sony’s launch examples of Pro-enhanced games included Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. This was an announcement-era sample, not a complete or current list. Check Sony’s current enhanced-games listing and verify the games you actually play; a title’s inclusion does not mean it receives the same kind of benefit as another.
PS4 games and compatibility
The PS5 Pro plays PS5 games and shares the same multiplayer community as other PS5 consoles. Sony said Game Boost can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, and that select PS4 games can receive enhanced image quality. A small number of PS4 games are not compatible, according to Sony’s current US product listing.
What is included, and what costs extra?
Sony’s US PlayStation Direct listing describes the PS5 Pro as an all-digital console. The package includes the console, a DualSense controller, 2TB SSD, horizontal stand feet, HDMI cable, power cord, manual, and pre-installed Astro’s Playroom. It does not include a disc drive or vertical stand.
If you own physical PS5 or PS4 games, or want to play Blu-ray discs, include the separately sold detachable disc drive in your total cost. Sony says an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the Pro during setup.

The PS5 CFI-1000 and CFI-2000 console covers and the PS5 console base are not compatible. Since horizontal feet are included, the vertical stand is an optional accessory rather than a requirement.

1. Compare the real local price
Check current local prices for the Pro and standard PS5, then add the disc drive if you want physical media. Sony’s recommended retail price is a reference point, not a live retailer quote. Account for tax and any accessories you genuinely need.
2. Check your regular games
Look for Pro enhancements in the games you play most. If your library is mostly games without a Pro-specific upgrade, the hardware premium may deliver less visible value for your use. A long list of supported games is not evidence that every title benefits.
3. Consider your display and priorities
The Pro is most compelling if you care about image clarity, ray tracing, or higher frame rates on a suitable display. You do not need to replace a working TV simply because you buy a Pro: whether an upgrade is worthwhile depends on the screen you have, the games you play, and the presentation you value. Sony’s 4K and frame-rate claims describe capabilities, not guaranteed results across the library.
4. Include physical media in the decision
Because the Pro is sold as an all-digital console, buyers who want disc games or movie playback should account for the separate compatible drive. If you only buy digital games, that additional purchase may not matter.
5. Treat an upgrade differently from a first console
If you already own a working PS5, compare the cost of replacing it with the specific enhanced games and display benefits you expect to use. Sony’s specifications describe what the Pro offers, but they do not establish that the upgrade is good value for every existing owner. For a first PS5, compare the Pro’s benefits with the lower-priced standard models and decide whether those benefits justify the difference.
Who should buy the PS5 Pro?
- Consider it if you regularly play Pro-enhanced games, use a display that can show the improvements you care about, and are comfortable with the higher price.
- Lean toward a standard PS5 if you are budget-conscious, are satisfied with the standard console’s presentation, or your favorite games do not have meaningful Pro enhancements.
- Calculate the full cost first if you rely on physical games or want Blu-ray playback, because the disc drive is sold separately.
- For a current PS5 owner, upgrade only if the improvements in your own games and setup are worth the cost of replacing a console that already works for you.
Sony positions the Pro as a way for dedicated gamers and creators to take the PS5 experience further. That describes the product’s intended audience, not a guarantee that every buyer will see enough improvement to justify its price.
