Choose the phone’s Wi-Fi name (SSID), enter its hotspot password, and let the PS5 test the connection. Whether it works—and what it costs—depends on your phone, cellular signal, carrier, and plan.
What you need before connecting
- A phone with cellular data enabled and a hotspot feature supported by its carrier and plan. Apple notes that Personal Hotspot is not available with all carriers and additional fees may apply (Apple’s Personal Hotspot guide); Google likewise warns that some carriers limit or charge extra for tethering (Android hotspot and tethering guidance).
- The hotspot’s Wi-Fi name and password. Use the hotspot password, not the phone’s screen-lock code.
- The phone close enough to the PS5 to maintain a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
Turn on the phone’s hotspot
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Personal Hotspot. On some iOS versions, the path is Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join, and note the Wi-Fi name and password shown on the screen.
If Personal Hotspot is missing, Apple says the carrier may need to enable it or the plan may not support it. The precise availability and charges are carrier- and plan-specific.

On Android
- Swipe down to open Quick Settings and tap Hotspot. If the tile is not visible, edit Quick Settings to add it.
- Check the hotspot name and password in your phone’s hotspot settings. Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Connect the PS5 to the hotspot
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, following Sony’s internet connection setup instructions.
- Select your phone’s hotspot from the Wi-Fi network list. Confirm the SSID—the network name—so you do not choose a nearby network with a similar name.
- Enter the hotspot password when prompted, then choose to connect. Sony marks password-protected Wi-Fi networks with a padlock and also supports manual setup if a network does not appear in the list.
- Allow the PS5 to complete its connection check. If it fails, make sure the phone’s cellular data and hotspot are still on, then verify the selected network and password.
Why the PS5 may not connect—or may connect without internet
The hotspot does not appear
- Confirm hotspot sharing is enabled and keep the phone near the console.
- Check that the phone is broadcasting Wi-Fi and verify its network name in hotspot settings.
- On a supported iPhone, try turning on Maximize Compatibility. Apple says this may help a device connect, but warns it can reduce performance.
- If the network still does not show, Sony allows manual setup through the internet connection setup flow.
The password is rejected
Recheck the password displayed in the phone’s hotspot settings and enter it again on the PS5. Sony recommends checking the SSID, password, and security method when troubleshooting a connection (PS5 connection troubleshooting).

The network is IPv6-only
Sony says the PS5 supports IPv6 but does not support IPv6-only connections. If the phone’s mobile network is configured that way, the limitation is on the network side; ask the carrier whether it can provide a compatible connection.
Online play has strict NAT, or hosting and joining fail
Mobile carriers and hotspot implementations can restrict inbound connections or use carrier-level network translation. The behavior depends on the carrier and network, so ask your provider about your plan and mobile network. A PS5 setting or a DNS change cannot be assumed to remove a carrier-side restriction.

Data use, cost, and gaming performance
When the PS5 uses the phone hotspot, console downloads, updates, game traffic, and streaming use the phone’s cellular connection. Check your carrier’s current tethering allowance, fees, throttling rules, and device limits before downloading a large game or update; none is universal across plans. Apple advises users to check data usage, and Google notes that tethering may be limited or incur an extra charge in some plans.

A hotspot can be useful for temporary access, but it should not be assumed to perform like a fixed broadband connection, particularly for games sensitive to latency. Hotspot or router: which connection should you use?
A phone hotspot is a practical option when you have suitable cellular coverage and your plan permits the needed use. A home Wi-Fi router is generally the more natural choice when available and stable. Choose based on your signal and connection stability, data allowance and cost, the latency your games require, and your carrier’s hotspot rules—not on a universal claim that one option is always faster.
