PS5 Performance Mode vs. Quality Mode: Which Should You Use for an Action RPG?

Performance Mode often suits action RPG players who prioritize smooth motion; Quality Mode favors visual detail. Game-specific targets and display requirements vary.

For most action RPGs on PS5, start with Performance Mode if you value smooth movement and responsive-feeling combat. Choose Quality Mode if you would rather prioritize image detail and are comfortable with a lower frame-rate target. Neither setting is automatically better: the game determines what each mode does. If you are asking, “Should I use Performance or Quality mode on PS5?” or “Is Quality Mode worth 30 FPS?”, check your game’s menu and try both.

What changes between Performance and Quality modes?

Performance Mode generally prioritizes smoother motion; Quality or Resolution Mode generally prioritizes graphic quality. PlayStation describes the choice as “Make motion in your game smoother with performance mode, or have higher graphic quality in resolution mode.” The preset applies only to games that offer it, and those labels do not guarantee a particular frame rate or resolution across all titles. PlayStation Support’s guide to PS5 game presets explains the broad distinction.

In an action RPG, smoother motion may make it easier to follow a fast-moving enemy, read an animation, or keep track of the camera during a dodge or parry. That can make combat feel more responsive to you, but Performance Mode is not a universal guarantee of lower input latency or a better experience in every game. Quality Mode can be preferable when you value image detail more than motion smoothness.

How do official PS5 game examples compare?

Official game pages show why it is important to read the mode descriptions rather than assume the names mean the same thing everywhere. These figures are the modes listed for the PS5 versions; where a page calls them targets, they are targets rather than a promise that every scene stays at that rate.

Game (PS5) Quality or Graphics Balanced Performance Display notes
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers 30 FPS 40 FPS 60 FPS Balanced requires a 120Hz-compatible display. PlayStation’s game listing also publishes separate PS5 Pro targets.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered 4K/30fps 4K/40fps 4K/60fps The listed rates are targets, and 4K requires a compatible screen. See PlayStation’s game listing.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Graphics Mode emphasizes 4K Not specified in the cited interview Performance Mode emphasizes 60 FPS Director Naoki Hamaguchi says players can select the options in the menu. See the PlayStation.Blog interview.

The examples are not a controlled comparison between games: they illustrate that rates, middle options, and the meaning of a mode vary. In particular, do not assume Quality always means native 4K or Performance always means 60 FPS.

Which mode should you use for an action RPG?

Choose Performance if combat readability matters most

Start here if you care most about fluid movement, tracking enemies, or following quick camera changes. Play through a representative fight rather than judging only a static scene. If movement feels clearer and easier to follow, keep the setting.

Choose Quality if visual detail matters more

Try Quality when the game’s image presentation is your priority and its lower frame-rate target feels acceptable. A 30 FPS target may suit you if you prefer the visual trade-off, but it is a personal preference, not a universal recommendation.

Try Balanced when the game offers it

A middle setting can trade some smoothness for image quality, but its availability and display requirements are game-specific. For example, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers lists 40 FPS Balanced on PS5 and specifies a 120Hz-compatible display requirement. Do not generalize that requirement to other modes or games.

Do you need a 120Hz TV for Performance Mode?

No general 120Hz-display requirement for Performance Mode is established by these examples. Wuchang’s listing attaches the 120Hz-compatible-display condition to Balanced mode. PlayStation’s guidance says 120Hz output depends on both a compatible display and a game that supports that frame rate; VRR likewise requires support from the game and TV. Check the relevant game’s specifications and your display before relying on either feature. PlayStation’s PS5 video-output guide covers resolution, 120Hz output, and VRR. The console can set resolution to Automatic to select the highest resolution the connected TV supports, but that does not replace the game’s own graphics-mode implementation.

A quick way to decide

  1. Open the game’s graphics or display options and read its own descriptions for Performance, Quality/Graphics/Resolution, and Balanced if available.
  2. Start with Performance if smoother motion is your priority; start with Quality if visual detail is more important.
  3. Test the same kind of action in each mode—such as a fight with dodging or camera movement—and keep the one that feels better on your screen.
  4. Before choosing a mode that mentions 120Hz, 4K, or VRR, confirm that both the game and your display support the feature.

The game’s menu is the authority for its particular trade-off. Mode names alone cannot tell you whether a target is maintained in every scene or which option will suit your preferences.
