A PS5 that won’t connect to your TV is frustrating, but it’s usually solvable. Most problems come down to a wrong TV input, a bad HDMI connection, an incompatible resolution, or a TV/AV receiver issue.
This beginner guide walks you through the fixes in the safest order—from quick checks to Safe Mode options—so you can get a picture back without guesswork.

Why your PS5 may not show up on your TV
The PS5 outputs video over HDMI. If the TV isn’t receiving a valid signal (or can’t decode the resolution/audio handshake), you’ll see a black screen, a flashing “no signal,” or you may only get sound.
Common root causes include:
- Incorrect TV input (HDMI 1 vs HDMI 2, wrong port label)
- Loose or damaged HDMI cable/port
- TV can’t handle the PS5’s current resolution or refresh rate
- HDCP/handshake issues (especially through receivers or HDMI splitters)
- Temporary PS5 software/video glitch
What to check first (quick fixes that solve most cases)
Verify the TV input and resolution mode
On your TV remote, press Input or Source and select the HDMI port you physically connected to (for example HDMI 2). If you’ve moved the cable recently, this is the fastest fix.

If your TV has a “Game Mode” or “Enhanced HDMI,” turn it on for that HDMI port. Some TVs default to different processing modes that can cause handshake delays.
Confirm the PS5 is actually outputting video
When you turn on the PS5, watch for a sign of life on the console:
- Power light should be on (white).
- If the PS5 is in rest mode, wake it up and wait 10–20 seconds for video to negotiate.
- If the screen stays black immediately after boot, move to HDMI and Safe Mode steps.
Replace/reshat the HDMI connection
Unplug the HDMI from both ends, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in firmly. Don’t just “wiggle” it—fully reseat it in the PS5 and TV ports.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Try a different HDMI port on the TV
HDMI ports can go bad, and some ports support different features (4K/120Hz, HDCP handling, ARC/eARC routing).
- Move the PS5 cable to another HDMI port (ex: from HDMI 1 to HDMI 3).
- Change the TV input to match the new port label.
Try a different HDMI cable
Use a known-good HDMI cable. If you’re trying to use 4K at high refresh rates, a “High Speed” or “Ultra High Speed” HDMI cable is safer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If you only have one cable, borrow one from a friend or test an extra spare.
- A damaged connector can still “click” but fail during handshake.
Test the PS5 on another TV or monitor
This is the fastest way to prove the console is (or isn’t) the problem.
- Connect the PS5 to a different display.
- If it works elsewhere, the TV port/input settings or cable/receiver chain is the culprit.
- If it still doesn’t, proceed with resolution/Safe Mode steps.
Adjust PS5 video output (when the TV can’t handle the signal)
If your TV previously worked with the PS5 but suddenly stopped, the PS5 resolution or refresh rate might have changed (or the TV’s HDMI settings might have reset after an update).
Change resolution from the PS5 settings (if you can see the menu)
If you can get any display (even a partial screen), change video output using:

- Open Settings.
- Go to Screen and Video.
- Select Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic or try 1080p first for maximum compatibility.
- Set HDR to Off temporarily if your TV is unsure about HDR negotiation.
- Set 120 Hz Output to Off if you’re not sure your TV supports it.
After changes, the screen may flicker as the PS5 renegotiates the HDMI signal.
Reset video output using Safe Mode
If the display is black or you can’t reach Settings, you can force the PS5 to use a more compatible output.
You’ll use Safe Mode and choose the video reset option.
Audio and display settings that can break video output
Most “no signal” issues are video-handshake related, but audio routing can still cause blank screens when an HDMI receiver or soundbar is in the chain.
HDMI device and sound routing checks
- If you have an AV receiver, bypass it temporarily by plugging PS5 directly into the TV.
- Turn off ARC/eARC temporarily in TV sound settings if available, then retest.
- Remove HDMI splitters/extenders during troubleshooting; they often break HDCP handshakes.
When using a receiver or soundbar
Many receivers need to support the same video formats as your PS5 output. If the receiver can’t pass through 4K/120Hz or HDR properly, your TV may show “No Signal.”

Safe Mode walkthrough for common black-screen scenarios
Safe Mode is your best tool when the PS5 won’t display normally. It’s also useful after a resolution change gone wrong.
Boot into Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off (not rest mode).
- Press and hold the power button on the console.
- Hold until you hear a second beep (usually after about 7 seconds), then release.
- Connect the controller via USB and press the PS button.
You should see the Safe Mode menu on the TV/monitor.
Run actions: Change Resolution and Update System Software
From Safe Mode, use these options in this order.
- Change Resolution: forces a lower, more compatible output.
- Update System Software: can fix display handshake issues caused by a broken or outdated system component.
- If the issue started after a new update, you still should try the resolution reset first; it’s the most direct fix for black screens.
Exact menu wording can vary slightly by system version, but the options are generally named as above.
Common symptoms and what they usually mean
| What you see | Most likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| No signal / black screen | Wrong HDMI input, bad cable, incompatible resolution | Reselect TV input, reseat HDMI, then try Safe Mode <Change Resolution> |
| PS5 sound works, picture doesn’t | TV can’t decode video handshake, receiver pass-through issue | Plug PS5 directly into TV; lower resolution to 1080p |
| Flickering or black screen after boot | HDR/120Hz mismatch | Turn off HDR and 120 Hz output; use 1080p |
| Picture appears, then goes blank | HDCP negotiation or unstable HDMI connection | Try a different HDMI port/cable; remove HDMI splitter/extender |
| Only works on one specific TV | TV HDMI capability/firmware differences | Update TV firmware; try PS5 resolution 1080p/60 Hz |
Troubleshooting checklist (in the order you should try)
- Confirm the correct TV input/source and HDMI port label.
- Power cycle everything: turn off TV, turn off PS5, unplug both from power for 60 seconds, then reconnect.
- Reseat the HDMI on both ends; try a different HDMI port.
- Test with a different HDMI cable.
- Test the PS5 on another TV/monitor.
- If still no picture, boot Safe Mode and run Change Resolution.
- If Safe Mode loads, set resolution to 1080p, turn off HDR and 120 Hz, then retest.
- If using a receiver/soundbar, bypass it and plug PS5 directly into the TV.
- Update PS5 system software from Safe Mode if available.
When none of the above works

FAQs
Why does my PS5 say No Signal but the TV works with other devices?
That usually points to an HDMI handshake/resolution mismatch or a failing cable/port on the PS5 or TV. Try another HDMI cable and then force a lower output using Safe Mode > Change Resolution.
What resolution should I use to get the picture back fastest?
Use 1080p first. It’s the most widely compatible mode across older TVs and monitors, and it avoids many HDR/120Hz negotiation problems.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a bad HDMI cable cause flashing or black screens?
Yes. HDMI cables can fail intermittently, which often shows up as flicker, random blackouts, or a “No Signal” message. Testing with a known-good cable is the fastest proof.
Does turning off HDR help if the PS5 won’t display?
It can. HDR and certain high refresh modes sometimes cause handshake issues on TVs that don’t fully support the format. If you can access Settings, switch HDR Off and retest.
How do I fix it if I only see the Safe Mode menu but not the normal PS5 home screen?
That pattern often means the normal output settings are incompatible. Lower resolution to 1080p, disable HDR and 120 Hz, then restart the PS5 and test the HDMI connection again.
Bottom Line
When your PS5 won’t connect to your TV, start with the basics: correct HDMI input, reseat the cable, and try a different port or cable. Then use Safe Mode to force a compatible video output.
