Discord’s DM rules depend on the other person’s privacy settings and whether you share at least one server with them. That means “not friends” doesn’t automatically block DMs—some users simply limit who can message them.
In this 2024 guide, you’ll learn the real paths that work for sending a Discord direct message without being friends, plus what to do when you don’t see a Message button or the chat won’t start.

Quick reality check: if the other user has DMs restricted and you don’t share a server, you may not be able to initiate a DM at all. In those cases, the only viable options are asking in a shared community context or sending a friend request (if they allow it).

Why you can’t always DM non-friends on Discord
Discord gives users control over who can start a DM conversation. Common triggers that stop you from messaging someone you’re not friends with include:
#1 Best Overall
- Unleash more fun chatting and hanging out with friends on Discord with Nitro!
- Get access to all Nitro perks, including HD streaming, custom emojis, bigger file uploads, and more.
- A great gift for yourself and your favorite folks on Discord. Nitro gift card codes are easy to use and never expire.
- Available in 1, 3, 6, and 12 month amounts. Cannot be redeemed for the Nitro Basic plan.
- Gift card code will be delivered via email. No returns or refunds on Discord Nitro gift card codes. Terms apply.
- DM privacy settings on their account (they may only allow DMs from server members).
- No shared servers between you and them.
- Blocking (if you’ve been blocked, you won’t be able to open a DM thread).
- Account restrictions (rate limiting or other temporary limits can make messaging behave oddly).
Because these settings are user-controlled, the same approach can succeed for one person and fail for another.
Prerequisites before you try to DM
Before you hunt for buttons, confirm these basics:
- You and the target user share at least one server.
- You can access their profile from within Discord (search results, member list, or clickable presence in a shared channel).
- Your Discord client is updated (Discord changes UI labels frequently; version mismatches can hide options).
If you share zero servers, your chances drop sharply—often the Message button won’t exist at all.
Method 1: Message them from a shared server (most common)
If you share a server, Discord commonly lets you open a DM from the server member list. This works even if you are not friends, as long as their DM settings allow it for server members.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrom the server member list
Use this path on desktop/web. The labels are similar across platforms.
- Open Discord and select the server where you both are members.
- Go to Member List (often shown on the right side or under a server menu).
- Find the person’s username and hover/click their entry.
- Look for a Message (or chat bubble) button.
- Click Message to open the DM composer.
- Send your message.
If you don’t see a Message option, move to Method 2 or troubleshooting.
From an in-channel profile (if their profile is clickable)
Sometimes you can open a profile directly from a message they sent in a shared channel.

- Open their profile panel.
- If available, click Message to start a DM.
- Send the message.
This depends on the UI you’re using and whether Discord is showing profile actions.

Method 2: DM from their user profile (when the Message button exists)
If Discord allows it, the simplest path is often straight from their profile. The key sign you can DM them: you’ll see a Message button (instead of only add friend / mutual server actions).
On the Discord desktop app (Windows/macOS)
- Open Discord.
- Use the left sidebar to find Search (magnifying glass).
- Search for the user name (or open a profile you already have access to).
- Open their profile.
- If you see Message, click it.
- Type your DM and press Enter.
If there’s no Message button, their settings or your relationship/server overlap may block initiating DMs.
On iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
- Open the Discord app.
- Find the target user via search or by tapping their name in a shared server.
- Open their profile.
- If you see Message, tap it.
- Compose your message and tap Send.
On Android
- Open Discord on Android.
- Open the target user’s profile via shared server context or search.
- Tap Message if it appears.
- Type your message and send.
On the web version
- Go to discord.com and sign in.
- Open the target user’s profile.
- Look for a Message button.
- Click Message and send.
If the button is missing on web too, switching devices usually won’t help—your best next step is troubleshooting the cause.
Method 3: If DMs are blocked, use a server-based workaround
If you can’t start a DM, you still have options that don’t violate Discord norms—especially in shared servers.

- In a shared server channel, write a clear question or request.
- Include context so they don’t have to guess.
- End with a polite line like: If you’re open to it, feel free to DM me.
This approach works when their account blocks incoming DMs but allows them to proactively message you.
Use mentions responsibly and avoid spamming
Mentioning can help, but don’t flood. If you keep pinging or repeating the same request, moderation tools may intervene.
- Send one message with a reason to respond.
- Wait for a reply.
- If they don’t respond, stop and try a different server context (or move to friend request if appropriate).
Method 4: Send a friend request as a gateway to DMs
Friend requests can sometimes open the path to messaging, depending on each user’s settings. This isn’t guaranteed, but it’s a standard fallback.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the target user’s profile.
- Click Add Friend (or the equivalent button on their profile).
- Wait for them to accept.
- Once accepted, open the DM and message normally.
If they don’t accept, you still can’t force a DM.
Method 5: Use DMs via an invite to a private or community channel (only if permitted)
Some communities have structured ways to contact members—like ticket channels, staff-only rooms, or verified onboarding channels. If the server rules allow it, you can get a response without direct DM access.
- Check server rules for how to request help or contact a member.
- Use an official channel (e.g., #help, #support, or a ticket system).
- If you’re invited to a private space, follow the server’s contact flow.
This is often the fastest path when the person’s account restricts incoming DMs.

Troubleshooting: What to try when the DM button is missing
If you don’t see a Message button or the DM won’t open, work through these causes systematically.
You share no servers with them
Many users set DMs to allow only server members. If you’re not in any shared server, Discord may prevent initiating a DM.
- Confirm mutual servers: check their profile for Mutual Servers.
- If appropriate, join a mutual community where you’re allowed to participate (no “fake” interactions just to message).
You’re blocked, or they disabled incoming DMs
If they blocked you, Discord typically won’t let you start a conversation normally. Likewise, some accounts restrict DMs to prevent unsolicited messages.
- Look for changes in their profile accessibility.
- Try messaging from a shared server member list (sometimes the button appears there even when other entry points fail).
- If it still won’t work, treat it as a settings/blocked limitation and switch to a server-based approach or friend request.
You were reported/limited, or your account is rate-limited
Discord can impose temporary limits if behavior triggers anti-spam systems. This can make DMs feel inconsistent.
- Wait a while (often 10–30 minutes, sometimes longer).
- Try again from a different client (web vs app) only if the error suggests a client issue.
- Avoid sending multiple DM attempts in quick succession.
Privacy settings changed recently (yours or theirs)
Both sides matter. A recent change can remove the Message option immediately.
- Confirm your own privacy settings if messaging has worked before but suddenly doesn’t.
- Check whether you’re still in the same mutual server(s).
Common mistakes that prevent DMs
- Only relying on search results—you might need a shared server member list entry to see Message.
- Sending repetitive “hey” messages—some users block unsolicited contact patterns.
- Trying multiple DM entry points rapidly—this can look like spam and trigger rate limits.
- Ignoring server rules—many communities expect contact through specific channels.
- Assuming you can always DM anyone—Discord’s privacy controls are user-owned.

| Action | When it works | What can still block it |
|---|---|---|
| Send a direct message | You share a server and their settings allow server members to DM | They restrict DMs, you’re blocked, or you share no servers |

| Request contact via server channels | They can read and respond in public/private server spaces | They don’t check that channel or choose not to respond |
FAQs
Can I DM someone on Discord if we share no servers?
Usually no. Many users restrict DMs to server members, so without mutual servers you often won’t see a Message button. Your best options are a friend request or contacting them through a shared community context.
Why do I only see Add Friend but not Message?
That typically means their settings are limiting DM initiation. It can also happen if you can’t reach their profile action that allows direct messaging. Try starting from a shared server member list if there is one.
What if the Message button exists but the chat won’t send?
It could be rate limiting, a temporary client issue, or a privacy/block conflict. Wait a short period, try again via a different client, and avoid repeated DM attempts in rapid succession.
Does mentioning someone guarantee they’ll DM me back?
No. Mentions increase visibility, but they don’t override privacy settings. Respect the server culture, keep your message specific, and be prepared that they may ignore it.
If I’m blocked, can I still send a friend request?
Often you cannot successfully establish contact if you’re blocked. Even if the UI appears to allow an action, it usually won’t result in a real message thread. Treat it as a hard stop and use server-based contact instead.
Bottom Line
To send a Discord direct message without being friends, the most reliable route is using a shared server to open the Message button from the member list or profile. If you don’t see Message, it’s typically due to the other user’s privacy settings, missing mutual servers, or a block.
When DMs are restricted, the practical workaround is to communicate through shared server channels and ask them to DM you, or send a friend request if that’s allowed. This keeps contact respectful, effective, and aligned with how Discord’s messaging controls are designed.
