Yes, modifying a PS5 can put both the console and your PlayStation account at risk. Sony’s rules prohibit modified hardware and software, security bypasses, downgrading, and unauthorized exploitation. If Sony determines that its terms were violated, it reserves the right to restrict system software, suspend an account or console, end access to PlayStation services, and deny warranty or repair support. A modified PS5 can also fail to install official updates or lose data during recovery. However, Sony does not publish a jailbreak-specific detection rate, ban rate, or probability of permanent hardware failure, so no one can honestly promise that every modified console will be banned or bricked.
The practical risks are different: an account suspension affects one account, while a console suspension can block every account from PlayStation services on that machine. Offline disc games may still work if they do not require those services. Recovery is possible in some software-failure cases through Sony’s official USB reinstall procedure, but reinstalling erases the console and does not guarantee that a suspension will be lifted.

What Sony’s rules say about PS5 jailbreaking
Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits using unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software with the system software. It also prohibits bypassing, disabling, or circumventing encryption, security, or authentication; reinstalling older versions; and exploiting system software outside documented authorized use.
The licence allows Sony Interactive Entertainment to release security patches or other changes that block unauthorized content or hardware. It also reserves remedies if Sony determines that the agreement was breached. Those remedies can include disabling some or all system software, disabling use of the PS5 online or offline, ending access to PlayStation services, and denying warranty, repair, or other services. These are powers reserved by the agreement, not a guarantee that every modification produces the same result.

The agreement cited here is the US version. Sony’s licence recognizes that local law can affect how its terms apply, so owners elsewhere should read the agreement for their country rather than assuming that the US wording is universal.
Account suspension and console suspension are not the same
Sony’s US PlayStation Terms of Service (March 2025) and its support guidance distinguish an account suspension from a system, or console, suspension. Understanding that difference matters because changing accounts does not address a suspension applied to the hardware.

Sony says a suspension notice should explain the reason and duration. Suspensions can be temporary or permanent. The cited documents do not state that all jailbreak activity triggers enforcement or describe a jailbreak-specific detection method.

There is no official Sony statement promising that a modified PS5 can safely connect to PlayStation Network. Connecting a modified system creates a conflict with the licence rules and exposes the console and any signed-in accounts to Sony’s enforcement options. A security update could also remove the modification or prevent unauthorized software from running.

Being offline is not a guarantee of safety. Sony’s licence covers unauthorized use of system software and hardware, not only activity that happens while connected to PlayStation services. Staying offline may reduce network exposure, but the official sources do not promise immunity from later enforcement, update failure, or other consequences.
What you can lose if the console is suspended
- Access to PlayStation Network services for every account on that PS5.
- Online multiplayer, cloud features, and other modes that require a PlayStation connection.
- Access to Store-purchased games or other digital content on the suspended console, as described in the Terms.
- Some services or features that depend on authentication, even if a game itself is installed.
A console suspension is different from deleting a user, changing the sign-in address, or creating a new account. The restriction is tied to the system, so account changes do not remove it.
How serious is the risk of bricking?
“Bricking” is often used to mean a console that is permanently unusable. Sony’s public documentation supports a narrower and more defensible warning: a modified PS5 may malfunction, fail to install official update data, lose data during a reinstall, or suffer damage if an installation is interrupted. Sony does not publish a numerical probability that a jailbreak causes permanent hardware failure, and it does not say that every modified PS5 becomes unusable.

That is a warning about possible outcomes, not a measured failure rate.

Risks during updates and recovery
- Failed official update: modified system files or an unofficial installation method can prevent the official update from installing.
- Improper operation: the console may start but behave unpredictably or fail to run system functions correctly.
- Interrupted installation: Sony warns that interrupting an installation can damage the console.
- Data loss: the official reinstall process deletes all data stored on the PS5.
- Warranty and repair limits: Sony warns that an altered console or unofficial method can void the system warranty and affect access to repair services.
These risks should not be collapsed into a claim that every jailbreak permanently destroys hardware. The evidence supports a risk of software failure and possible damage, but not a universal outcome or a jailbreak-specific percentage.
Can you undo a PS5 jailbreak?
You can attempt to restore the system with Sony’s documented recovery process, but that is not the same as guaranteeing a return to factory condition or restoring online privileges. Sony’s PS5 system-software guidance describes an official USB update and reinstall route. It does not say that reinstalling reverses a suspension or guarantees recovery on a modified console.
Official reinstall requirements
- A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- The folder structure and official reinstallation file specified on Sony’s support page.
- Approximately 1.2 GB of free USB space for the reinstall procedure. Sony lists approximately 1.1 GB for a standard update.
- A PC or Mac to download the official file from Sony.
- Access to Safe Mode on the PS5.
Reinstall procedure
- Use a PC or Mac to download the official PS5 reinstallation file from Sony’s support page. Do not use an unofficial file or source.
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and create the exact folders and filename Sony specifies.
- Copy the reinstallation file to the required folder on the USB drive.
- Turn off the PS5 completely, then start Safe Mode according to Sony’s instructions.
- Connect the USB drive and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Allow the installation to finish without removing power or the USB drive.
Sony states: Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.
Treat this as a full system reset. Games, saves, captures, users, and settings that are not otherwise backed up can be lost.

What to back up before any recovery attempt
Sony recommends regularly backing up data that can be archived. Backing up is prudent before using Safe Mode or reinstalling, but it does not prevent a ban, restore online access, or guarantee that a modified console will recover.
- Copy or synchronize save data using a method that is available to your account and console before the system becomes inaccessible.
- Move screenshots and video captures to external storage if you need to keep them.
- Record settings, user profiles, and game-specific configuration that you would otherwise have to recreate.
- Keep the original purchase and account information needed to redownload legitimate content after a successful reinstall.
- Use only an official Sony update or reinstall file and verify the USB drive’s format and folder names.
What happens to digital games and discs?
A console suspension can restrict access to Store-purchased content on that console under Sony’s Terms. That restriction is separate from whether the game files are still physically present on the drive. Games and modes that require online authentication or PlayStation services will not work during a console suspension.
Sony’s Terms state that disc games that run without connecting to PlayStation services may still be playable. That exception is conditional: a game can still require an online check, a license refresh, downloadable content, or a service connection for particular features. Do not interpret “offline disc play” as a way to retain every mode or piece of content.

- “Every jailbroken PS5 is automatically banned.” The licence and Terms reserve suspension powers, but the cited documents do not say that every modification is detected or automatically sanctioned.
- “Staying offline makes the console safe.” Offline use may limit network exposure, but it does not override the licence or guarantee later access to services.
- “A factory reset removes a console ban.” Sony’s reinstall instructions do not promise to reverse a suspension.
- “A new account defeats a console suspension.” A system suspension blocks all accounts from PlayStation services on that PS5.
- “All modified consoles brick.” Sony warns about malfunction, failed updates, data loss, and possible damage, but publishes no universal failure rate.
A safer decision framework
If online play and digital purchases are priorities
Do not modify the PS5. The licence restrictions, possible account or console suspension, loss of Store access, and update problems directly threaten the features you value. Keep the official system software current and use Sony’s documented update path.

If experimentation is more important than PlayStation services
Understand that you are accepting an uncertain outcome rather than choosing a supported feature. Sony can change system software, restrict services, deny repair or warranty support, and leave you with a console that cannot install an official update. There is no published risk percentage to use for calculating that trade-off.
If the console is already modified and malfunctioning
- Stop using unofficial update files or tools.
- Back up any data that remains accessible.
- Use Sony’s official support page and official reinstallation file only.
- Follow the Safe Mode reinstall procedure exactly and avoid interrupting power.
- If the reinstall fails, contact Sony support and describe the console’s condition accurately; do not assume warranty service will apply.
Regional and evidence limits
The enforcement documents linked above are Sony’s US licence and US Terms of Service. The recovery instructions come from Sony’s UK English support site. Wording, consumer protections, and available remedies can differ by country. Check the agreement and support page for your region before relying on a specific rule.
Sony’s public documents establish the categories of prohibited modification, possible remedies, suspension consequences, recovery requirements, and warnings about altered consoles. They do not provide a jailbreak-specific ban statistic, a permanent-brick probability, or a guaranteed method for preserving online access. Any precise percentage or promise beyond those points would be speculation.
