PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play lets other profiles on one selected PS5 use the account holder’s eligible purchased and downloaded games and media, including offline. It does not transfer ownership or purchases to those profiles. PlayStation Plus sharing is limited to selected benefits, while Share Play is a separate feature that streams a game session to a remote friend.
What PS5 game sharing actually does
On PS5, “game sharing” normally means Console Sharing and Offline Play. It is an account-controlled setting applied to a specific console, not a permanent transfer of games between PlayStation Network accounts.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
When the setting is enabled, anyone who uses that PS5 can play games and use media that the account holder has purchased and downloaded. Those users can continue using eligible content while the console is offline. PlayStation Support describes the feature and its activation path in its Console Sharing and Offline Play guide.

The practical distinction is important: another profile receives access on that console. The purchase remains associated with the account that bought it. The other profile does not become the owner, receive a transferable license, or gain the ability to download the purchase on an unrelated PS5 simply because it used the shared console.

What each account can access
| Situation | Access supported by PlayStation’s guidance | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Another profile using the PS5 selected for Console Sharing | The account holder’s purchased and downloaded games and media, including offline use on that PS5. | The purchase or ownership has moved to the other profile. |
| Another profile using the account holder’s PlayStation Plus entitlement | Selected Plus benefits can be shared on a PS5 with Console Sharing enabled; online multiplayer is an identified example. | Every Plus feature, catalog title, trial or promotion is automatically shared. |
| A friend joining through Share Play | A remotely streamed session in which the friend can watch or, where supported, participate without owning the game. | The friend has bought the game or can keep access after the session ends. |
Subscription access has two separate conditions. The account supplying the entitlement must still have an active subscription, and a subscription game or benefit must still be available under the current offering. Catalogs and other Plus benefits can change, so access should be checked against the current PlayStation Plus support information.
How Console Sharing and Offline Play is assigned
It is tied to the account that enables it
The setting belongs to the signed-in account. PlayStation says it is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in. If you sign in on another console, you may need to move the setting before users of that console can access your downloaded library.
Only one PS5 can be enabled at a time
An account can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on one PS5 at a time. This is why the feature is best treated as a choice of the one console where other local profiles need access. Enabling it on a new PS5 requires disabling it on the previous one first.
Offline access depends on the enabled console
Once enabled, other users of that specific PS5 can use eligible purchased and downloaded games and media without an internet connection. The account holder’s entitlement is still checked through the normal license system when necessary; offline sharing does not create independent licenses for the other profiles.

How to enable sharing on a PS5
Use the account that owns the purchased content and follow this exact menu path:
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account whose games or media you want to make available.
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
After enabling the setting, another profile on that same PS5 can use the account holder’s eligible downloaded content. If the menu offers only the option to disable, the account is already sharing on that console.
Moving sharing to another PS5
- On the currently enabled PS5, sign in to the owning account.
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Disable.
- Sign in to the same account on the new PS5.
- Open the same menu and choose Enable.
If the old console is available, disabling it there is the cleanest way to switch. A new console cannot become the account’s sharing console while the old one remains enabled.
What to do if the old PS5 is unavailable
When you no longer have the previous console, PlayStation provides a remote option in Account Management to deactivate all devices. This is an account-wide action rather than a quick reset for one selected machine, so use it only when necessary. PlayStation limits remote all-device deactivation to once every six months, according to its support guidance.

Which PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared?
PlayStation’s support material says selected Plus benefits can be shared on a primary PS4 and on one PS5 where Console Sharing is enabled. Online multiplayer is an example of a benefit identified as shareable. This does not establish that every Plus entitlement is available to every local profile.
- Active subscription required: If the account providing Plus expires, the associated shared benefit stops being available.
- Availability still matters: A game supplied through a catalog or other subscription program must remain available under the current terms.
- Do not assume every feature is shared: Treat cloud, discount, trial, catalog and other account-specific features according to the current Plus rules rather than assuming they follow online multiplayer.
For a local profile that cannot access an expected game or benefit, first confirm that the account that purchased the game or holds the subscription is the one with sharing enabled on that PS5.

Share Play is a remote streaming feature, not a second form of console activation. A host starts a session from their PS5 and streams the play session to a visitor. PlayStation Support says the visitor does not need to own the game. Depending on the mode, the visitor can watch, take control, or play together with the host.

The host needs PlayStation Plus. For the play-together mode, both the host and visitor need PlayStation Plus. The visitor is participating in a temporary streamed session; Share Play does not add the game to the visitor’s account or provide continuing access after the session ends.
Share Play’s operational limits
- Only one visitor can join a Share Play session at a time.
- A session ends automatically one hour after the visitor joins.
- The game must be available in the visitor’s country or region.
- Age ratings and parental-control settings can prevent a visitor from joining or seeing particular content.
- Visitors cannot save screenshots or video clips during the session.
- Some scenes may not appear to the visitor.
- The visitor’s own game is suspended while the session is active, and an online game may need to reconnect afterward.
These restrictions are separate from the one-console assignment used by Console Sharing. The two features solve different problems: local access to downloaded content versus a temporary remote session.

| Where it works | Other profiles using the selected local PS5. | A remote visitor connected to the host’s streamed session. |
| What is accessed | Eligible games and media purchased and downloaded by the account holder, plus selected Plus benefits. | The host’s current game session. |
| Does the other account own the game? | No; access remains tied to the purchasing account. | No; the visitor may participate without owning it. |

| Subscription requirement | Selected Plus benefits depend on an active Plus subscription. | The host needs Plus; both players need Plus for play-together mode. |
| Availability constraints | One enabled PS5 per account, with the account’s license and subscription rules still applying. | One visitor, a one-hour session, and age, region and parental-control restrictions. |
Troubleshooting missing games, benefits and access
A game shows a padlock or will not start
PlayStation identifies a padlock as a possible license or network issue. Confirm that the profile which purchased the game is the one that enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5. If the title comes from Plus, check that the subscription is active and that the title remains available.
Another profile cannot play while offline
Check the setting under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. If it is disabled, the account is not currently sharing on that console. If the account was recently moved, verify that the old PS5 was disabled or that remote all-device deactivation was completed.
Best Value
A Plus benefit is missing
Sharing covers selected benefits, not the entire subscription automatically. Verify the exact benefit, the subscription status of the supplying account, and whether the relevant game or catalog item is still available.
Share Play will not let a friend join
Check the host’s Plus status, and for play-together mode check the visitor’s Plus status as well. Then verify the one-visitor limit, the one-hour session rule, the game’s availability in the visitor’s region, and age or parental-control restrictions.
A practical decision guide
- Use Console Sharing and Offline Play when multiple people use the same physical PS5 and need access to the owner’s downloaded library, including offline.
- Use Share Play when a friend is elsewhere and needs to watch or temporarily participate in a game session without owning the title.
- Do not use either feature as a way to transfer a purchase. The purchasing account remains the account that owns the entitlement.
- Before changing consoles, decide which single PS5 should provide local access and disable the setting on the previous machine first.
Keeping those boundaries in mind prevents the most common misunderstanding: console sharing grants local use of an account’s eligible content, while Share Play streams a limited session to a visitor. Neither changes who bought the game.
