A choppy PS5 game can point to a game-specific frame-rate problem, a video-output setting, or the TV/monitor and HDMI connection. First check whether it happens in one game or across several. Then use Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output to confirm the signal the console is sending and test compatible display features one at a time.
First, identify where the choppiness happens
- One game only: Check that game’s performance or graphics mode, install any available game update, and look for current known issues or support from its publisher. Sony’s general display guidance does not diagnose frame pacing in individual games.
- Several games: Check PS5 video-output settings and the display/HDMI signal path. Temporarily compare behavior with VRR or 120 Hz Output disabled if the display behaves unexpectedly.
- Menus and other content also flicker, go black, or show an unexpected resolution: Prioritize the console’s reported output signal, display compatibility, HDMI port and cable, and display firmware. Those symptoms point to a signal/output check, not proof that a game’s frame rate is low.
This is a practical way to narrow the fault, not a universal diagnosis: the symptom alone cannot establish whether the game or display path is responsible.

Check the PS5’s actual video output
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device details. Check the reported resolution and whether the display supports the refresh-rate and VRR features you intend to use.
- Test VRR only when both the game and display support it. Sony says results vary by TV. To test VRR with an unsupported game, Sony advises turning on Apply to Unsupported Games to stabilize frame rate, but also says to turn it off if unexpected gameplay behavior occurs. Treat it as a reversible test, not a guaranteed fix. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide.
- Check 120 Hz Output only with a compatible display and game. If a supported game’s video output has problems on a monitor or another display device, Sony advises turning 120 Hz Output off.
- If the screen flickers, try Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. This limits output and may improve picture quality; it is a display troubleshooting test, not a frame-rate setting.
ALLM is a low-latency feature, not a frame-rate booster. Its availability depends on TV support; check the display manual. Also, a general “HDMI 2.1” label does not by itself establish that a particular port and TV configuration supports the signal you need. Sony notes that 4K/120 Hz support is not consistent across the market. Sony’s resolution guide.
Troubleshoot 4K/120 Hz, flicker, or signal loss
For a 4K/120 Hz problem, check the display’s specific capabilities and firmware, and make sure the PS5 is connected to an HDMI port that supports the feature. Follow the display maker’s instructions for any setting needed to enable high-bandwidth input.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor while testing; temporarily remove a receiver, sound bar, or capture device from the signal path. Sony’s picture guidance says: “Connect the PS5 console directly to the HDMI port on the screen.” Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting.
- Reseat the HDMI cable, then try another suitable HDMI port or a known-good cable. Sony recommends the supplied PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz for high-refresh troubleshooting. The supplied cable may already be suitable; replace a cable only if it is damaged, unsuitable, or implicated by testing. A cable change cannot improve a game’s internal frame rate. Sony’s resolution guide and picture troubleshooting.
- Update the TV or monitor firmware and recheck its port and input settings. Then reconnect the PS5 directly and review Current Video Output Signal again.
Use system-level troubleshooting cautiously
If several games are affected alongside broader system-feature or console performance problems, Sony lists Clear System Software Cache in Safe Mode as an option that may help with system-feature issues or performance drops. Sony describes Rebuild Database for system-feature problems or when a deleted game icon remains on Home; it is not documented as a general stutter cure. Sony’s Safe Mode guide.
To check for a system update, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony’s manual update guidance addresses consoles that have been offline for a long time or an update that failed; it does not establish outdated software as the cause of every stutter. Do not start with Safe Mode reset or reinstall options: they can delete data. Back up before any action that erases data, and confirm the selected option’s effect in Sony’s Safe Mode instructions. Sony’s game-launch guidance discusses reinstalling a game for launch problems, not as a universal frame-rate fix. Sony’s game troubleshooting guide.
