Check your vacuum’s exact model number and owner’s guide before removing a filter: Shark cordless models differ in filter count, placement and access, and not every model includes a HEPA filter. The steps and schedule below are documented for Shark’s IX140/IZ140 series; follow your own model’s instructions if they differ.
What to check before cleaning
Find the model number on the vacuum and open its owner’s guide. Shark’s IX140/IZ140 guidance describes pre-motor foam and felt filters and a post-motor filter, and notes that not all units come with a HEPA filter. The IZ462H product instructions provide a separate, model-specific removal and rinsing procedure. Do not assume your vacuum has the same parts or access points.

How to clean the filters
- Power off the vacuum. Follow your model’s guide for any additional safe-preparation steps.
- Open the specified filter access. Depending on the model, this may involve removing the dust cup or an access cover. Remove only the filters identified in your manual.
- Rinse washable filters with water only. Shark’s IX140/IZ140 guide says not to use soap. Do not wash a filter unless your model’s instructions identify it as washable.
- Air-dry each washed filter completely for at least 24 hours. Do not reinstall it while damp; Shark says this helps prevent liquid from being drawn into electrical parts.
- Reinstall the dry filters in their correct positions and close the vacuum as described in the model guide.
For the IZ462H, use its own filter instructions for access and handling rather than assuming the IX140/IZ140 layout applies.
How often to clean Shark cordless filters
For the IX140/IZ140 series, Shark recommends cleaning pre-motor filters at least once a month and the post-motor filter at least once a year. Heavy use may call for more frequent cleaning. The guide also recommends lightly tapping loose dust off between washes. These intervals are specific to that series; use the schedule in your own model’s manual if it differs.

What to do if suction is still weak
If suction remains weak after filter care, empty the dust cup and check for blockages as well as dirty filters. Shark’s general maintenance guidance recommends these checks; because that page is categorized for upright vacuums, use your cordless model’s guide for the exact locations and steps.
Choosing a replacement filter
Buy by exact vacuum model and filter position, not merely by the words “Shark cordless.” Shark’s IZ462H catalog lists model-specific pre-motor and post-motor parts. Shark’s XPMHIP1000 listing, for example, names compatible IP-series handheld models; it is not a universal cordless filter. Confirm the compatibility list and whether the part is washable or a replacement before ordering. The available guidance does not establish one replacement interval for all Shark cordless vacuums.
