Neither PS5 discs nor digital games are always cheaper over time. Discs can cost less when you find a good used copy and can resell it later; digital can win when the PlayStation Store discounts the same edition. Compare the exact game and content at the time you buy, and count only resale money you realistically expect to recover.
What the price evidence says—and what it does not
A July 2026 comparison by Kyle Orland at Ars Technica examined 19 popular PlayStation games. It compared each game’s standard PlayStation Store price and lowest Store discount in the previous year with current new Amazon disc prices, GameStop pre-owned prices, and the average of five successful eBay sales including shipping. The analysis adjusted where needed for included DLC or PS4-to-PS5 upgrades.

- Standard PlayStation Store prices were the most expensive option for 15 of the 19 games.
- A digital Store sale was the cheapest option for 10 games; used discs were cheapest for seven; two had roughly equivalent lowest sale-digital and disc prices.
- In that sample and period, Store sale prices were available 13%–33% of the time.
These results describe a selected sample, not every PS5 game or a promise about future prices. The comparison included examples of older games with a $59.99 Store standard price and $9.99 used discs, while some Store sale prices were half or less than the cheapest used discs. Those are examples from the analysis, not current price quotes. Check today’s listings for the game you want.

How to compare the real cost of a game
Compare like with like: the same game edition, region where relevant, and included content. A disc listing that includes DLC or a paid PS5 upgrade is not equivalent to a digital listing that does not. Sony’s PS4 disc to PS5 digital upgrade support page explains the upgrade path and its conditions; check the game’s own listing for what is included.

- Record the current new-disc price. Check a retailer listing for the exact edition.
- Check a pre-owned disc price. Include shipping and any other unavoidable cost, particularly for marketplace listings.
- Check the PlayStation Store price. Note whether it is the standard price or an active sale price.
- Decide whether you can wait. A sale price matters only if you are willing to wait for one; the sample’s sale frequency is not a forecast for a particular title.
- Estimate disc resale conservatively. Subtract expected proceeds after fees and shipping from what you pay. Use a plausible resale amount, not the assumption that you will recover the purchase price.
- Include equivalent content. Add the cost of any DLC or upgrade needed to make the two options comparable.
A useful calculation is disc net cost = purchase price + purchase-related costs − actual resale proceeds. Until you sell the disc, resale proceeds are an estimate, not a guaranteed discount.
How each buying option can work out

Which format is more economical for you?
Choose a disc when used prices and resale matter
A pre-owned disc can be the lowest-cost route if its purchase price is low and you later recover meaningful money by selling it. The advantage depends on the actual used listing and what a buyer will pay when you sell; neither is fixed by the format.

Choose digital when the sale price wins or convenience matters
A Store sale can undercut both new and used discs, so digital is not automatically the more expensive option. It also avoids handling discs. If you buy at full price, however, compare that price with current physical offers rather than assuming digital is cheaper or more convenient in every other respect.

Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature lets anyone using the enabled PS5 play games and media purchased and downloaded by the account, even when that console is offline. It can make a digital purchase useful to more than one person in a household. The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time; this is not unrestricted lending or account transfer.

Check your PS5 before buying discs or a drive
Sony’s US PS5 product information lists the standard PS5 with 1TB storage and Blu-ray playback for PS5 and PS4 game discs. The PS5 Digital Edition is listed with 825GB storage and no disc drive. A disc cannot be used on a console without a drive unless you have a compatible add-on.
Sony says its removable disc drive is intended for specified slim Digital Edition model groups, CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, or PS5 Pro, and that an internet connection is needed to pair the drive during setup. Verify your exact console model before considering this route; do not assume every Digital Edition can accept the accessory. If you are choosing between console models, include any hardware price difference in that separate decision rather than treating a disc as free access to physical games.

What Sony’s January 2028 disc announcement means
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Sony says new releases after that point will be sold in digital formats, while games released—or to be released—before January 2028 in disc format are unaffected and remain playable.
