What to Check Before Buying an OLED Gaming Monitor on Sale

Before buying an OLED gaming monitor on sale, confirm that its resolution and refresh rate fit your PC or console, verify its HDR certification and ports, and read the exact warranty and return terms. Then compare the final checkout price for the precise model and regional SKU—not just the advertised discount.

Does OLED or IPS suit your gaming and everyday use?

There is no universal winner. LG’s buying guide describes OLED as a fit for deep blacks and fast response in immersive gaming, while IPS can suit a mix of competitive gaming and daily desktop use. That is manufacturer guidance, not independent comparative testing; consider your games, desktop habits, and priorities rather than treating the panel type alone as a verdict. LG’s monitor buying guide also frames the choice around what the shopper values.

Will the size and resolution work at your desk?

Match screen size and resolution to your viewing distance, games, and graphics hardware. More pixels can deliver greater image detail, but rendering them generally demands more GPU performance. LG’s guidance says screens of 27 inches or larger can pair well with QHD, 4K, or higher resolutions. It also cautions that 4K may be poor value with a mid-range or older GPU, or for competitive shooters where high frame rates matter more.

Ask whether your system can run the games you actually play at the monitor’s native resolution and the frame rates you want. A sharper image is not necessarily a better fit if achieving it means giving up the smoothness you value.

Can your system use the advertised refresh rate?

Check the refresh rate available at the resolution you intend to use, not just the largest number in the product headline. High refresh rates can make motion appear smoother, particularly in competitive games, but your PC or console must be able to output the corresponding frame rate.

Some displays offer multiple resolution-and-refresh combinations. Confirm the exact supported modes in the model’s specifications, and check that your graphics hardware, cable, and chosen port can deliver the combination you want. For example, LG’s UK product page for the 27GX790A-B identifies a 480Hz refresh rate and ClearMR 21000 certification; those are published specifications for that model, not independent test results or a claim about every OLED monitor. What does the HDR label actually certify?

Do not assume that an HDR label alone establishes how a particular monitor will look. VESA’s DisplayHDR and DisplayHDR True Black programs set tiered requirements that include luminance, color gamut, contrast or black level, and color error. VESA advises shoppers to look for products that have been tested and certified under those programs, and to check the exact model in its certified-products listing.

Wording matters: generic “HDR-400” is not equivalent to the formal “DisplayHDR 400” tier. In VESA’s current summary table as accessed in 2026, DisplayHDR 400 specifies a minimum peak luminance of 400 cd/m² and 90% DCI-P3 coverage; DisplayHDR True Black 400 specifies 400 cd/m² and 95% DCI-P3 coverage. These are certification criteria, not measurements of a specific unit. VESA’s DisplayHDR overview.

Are the ports and adaptive sync right for your device?

Check the exact model’s port versions and bandwidth against the device you will connect. Verify HDMI and DisplayPort support, and USB-C if you need it. A port’s presence does not by itself guarantee that it supports your desired resolution and refresh rate.

Also confirm support for the adaptive-sync implementation used by your graphics card or console. LG’s buying guide identifies connectivity and FreeSync/G-SYNC compatibility as relevant checks; its 27GX790A-B product page advertises VESA AdaptiveSync certification. These are model-specific details, so confirm them for the exact SKU rather than assuming that a feature listed for one monitor applies to another.

What should you know about OLED care and warranty?

ASUS says image persistence or burn-in can occur when a static, high-contrast image remains onscreen for a prolonged period. Consider your usage: a display used mostly for varied games is a different pattern from one showing the same desktop elements for long stretches. Review the monitor’s pixel-cleaning and other OLED protection settings in its documentation. ASUS OLED care guidance.

Read the warranty terms for the exact model, SKU, and country before purchasing. Confirm whether and how the terms cover image retention or burn-in; do not assume that a protection feature means the issue is covered. Warranty conditions vary by product and region. ASUS support and warranty information.

How should you judge whether the sale is worth it?

Treat a discount as a dated offer, not a lasting product fact. An LG US promotion page displayed a validity end date of October 4, 2026; as of October 7, 2026, that promotion had expired. It should not be presented as a current deal. LG US promotions.

At checkout, verify the exact model and regional SKU, seller, final price, return terms, and applicable regional warranty. If several monitors meet your needs, compare them on the same practical criteria:

  • Resolution and pixel density for your screen size and viewing distance.
  • Refresh rate at your chosen resolution, including any dual-mode options.
  • Exact, verified HDR certification rather than generic HDR wording.
  • Ports, bandwidth, and adaptive-sync support for your device.
  • Size, aspect ratio, and curvature for your desk and games.
  • OLED protection settings, warranty terms, seller return policy, and live checkout price.
