1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a clearer, more responsive PS5 shooter setup, first confirm what your display and game support, then enable 120 Hz and VRR only where compatible. Calibrate HDR and brightness in both the console and game, and treat motion blur, field of view, and monitor controls as per-title or display-specific choices—not universal presets.
Check what your PS5 and display can actually output
Before changing settings, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review Information for the Connected HDMI Device and Current Video Output Signal to see the connected display’s reported resolution, VRR, and HDR capabilities. With resolution set to Automatic, the PS5 selects the highest resolution the TV supports. The available result still depends on the display, the game, the HDMI connection, and the game’s selected mode. PlayStation’s video output guide documents these settings.

HDMI 2.1 labeling alone does not confirm that a TV supports every feature a player may want. Check the PS5’s connected-device information and the display’s own specifications before expecting 120 Hz, VRR, or ALLM.

In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set 120 Hz Output to On if both your display and the specific FPS game support 120 Hz. This lets the PS5 use a 120 Hz output when a supported game calls for it; it does not make every game render at 120 frames per second. A game’s performance or frame-rate mode may also affect its output, and any resolution or visual-quality trade-off is title-specific.

If the display behaves unexpectedly, Sony advises turning 120 Hz Output off. If you are trying to get 4K/120 Hz and it does not work, check the setup before replacing equipment:
- Confirm that the display supports 4K/120 Hz and that its firmware is current.
- Connect the PS5 to the display’s correct HDMI 2.1 port. If possible, connect directly rather than through an audio/video receiver.
- Try the cable supplied with the PS5, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A replacement is not automatically necessary.
- Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, check that Resolution is set to Automatic or 2160p, and Video Transfer Rate is set to Automatic.
- If the screen flickers, Sony says lowering Video Transfer Rate to -1 or -2 may help, but it can limit some output formats.
These checks follow Sony’s 4K resolution and 120 Hz troubleshooting guidance.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Use VRR for supported games, with a fallback if it looks wrong
When both the display and game support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), set VRR to Automatic in Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with the PS5’s output. Sony says it can minimize frame-pacing issues and screen tearing; it may also make gameplay feel smoother or reduce input lag, but the result varies with the game, TV, and chosen visual mode.

Sony’s April 25, 2022 VRR announcement describes the feature for HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors. It also notes that games may be optimized for VRR through updates, so do not rely on an old launch-era compatibility list as a current one.

The optional Apply to Unsupported Games setting extends VRR output to games not identified as supporting it. Sony warns that results vary and unexpected visual effects can occur. Try it only if you are willing to check each game; turn it back off if the image or behavior is worse.
Let ALLM reduce latency when your TV supports it
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) lets a supported TV switch automatically to a low-latency mode during gameplay. In the PS5’s Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output menu, keep the ALLM option available or automatic if your TV supports the feature. If you are unsure, check the display’s specifications rather than assuming HDMI 2.1 guarantees ALLM.

- Replaceable Stick Modules and Caps
Sony notes that VRR output can trigger low-latency mode even when ALLM is set to Off. The setting is therefore display-dependent, and its effect may not be controlled by the ALLM toggle alone.
Calibrate HDR and brightness for the actual screen
HDR is not an automatic visibility boost. In the PS5 video output settings, Always On converts content that does not support HDR to HDR output, while On When Supported leaves unsupported content in SDR. If you do not want SDR games or menus converted, On When Supported is a cautious starting point—not a guarantee of the best competitive image on every display.

Run Adjust HDR on the PS5 for your display, then use the game’s own brightness or HDR calibration screen if it has one. Raising brightness indiscriminately can lift dark areas and weaken contrast; aim to reveal detail without making intended blacks look gray. The right result depends on the screen and the game.
Leave RGB Range on its proper automatic behavior unless there is a mismatch. PlayStation says to change it only when an HDMI device does not send range information correctly. Sony’s video output guide explains the console’s HDR, Adjust HDR, Deep Color Output, and RGB Range options.
Check the game’s own image and performance options
Game menus differ, so there is no universal numerical preset for PS5 shooters. Look for these options in the title’s own settings and test them in a familiar scene:
Recommended Free Tools
- Performance or frame-rate mode: Choose the mode that prioritizes higher frame rate if responsiveness is the goal. The game determines any resolution or visual-quality compromise.
- Motion blur: If moving targets are hard to follow, test a lower setting or turn it off. Whether that looks clearer is a preference, not a guaranteed performance gain.
- Field of view (FOV): Use the slider if available. A wider view can reveal more peripheral space but can make distant targets appear smaller; choose the balance that suits the game and your screen.
- Brightness and HDR: Follow the game’s calibration screen rather than using brightness to erase all dark contrast.
- Reticle, color, and accessibility options: Adjust available controls for your visual needs and the game’s interface.
Use monitor controls carefully: clarity settings can conflict
Monitor controls are separate from PS5 system settings, and their names and trade-offs vary by model. As one specific example, Sony’s SDM-27U9M2 guide describes a Black equalizer from 0 to 10, with higher values improving visibility in dark areas on that monitor. Raising a dark-area control can also change the image’s contrast, so adjust it to suit the game rather than treating a maximum value as a universal preset.
That monitor also offers motion-blur reduction, latency, response-time, and Adaptive-Sync/VRR controls. Its guide says higher latency-control values reduce latency while reducing blur reduction; motion-blur reduction does not work below a 100 Hz input signal; and enabling VRR prevents adjustment of motion-blur reduction. This is a device-specific example of a common kind of trade-off, not a rule for all monitors. Consult your own display’s manual before combining clarity and synchronization features.
