How to Connect a Chromebook to a TV and Use It as a Larger Display

You can connect a Chromebook to a TV with a compatible video cable or adapter, then mirror the laptop screen in ChromeOS display settings. For a wireless alternative, use Chromecast to share a Chrome tab or the whole screen. The right setup depends on your Chromebook’s ports and whether you want a wired display or wireless screen sharing.

How do I connect my Chromebook to my TV?

First check the video output on your Chromebook and the input on your TV. Google documents HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, VGA, and USB-C connections, but the ports and video capabilities vary by Chromebook model. If the two devices use different ports, you may need an adapter. See Google’s Chromebook monitor connection guide and your model’s documentation before buying a cable or adapter.

  • Both devices have HDMI: connect them with a suitable HDMI cable. Not every Chromebook has an HDMI port.
  • The Chromebook has USB-C and the TV has HDMI: a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter may work only if that Chromebook’s USB-C port supports video output.
  • The devices have other mismatched ports: choose an adapter that converts the Chromebook’s output to an input on the TV; Google gives DisplayPort-to-HDMI as an example.

For USB-C-to-HDMI, verify video support for your particular Chromebook before choosing an adapter. If both devices have HDMI, an HDMI cable is the simpler option.

How to mirror a Chromebook on a TV with a cable

  1. Connect the cable or adapter to the Chromebook and TV.
  2. Turn on the TV and select the HDMI or other input used for the connection.
  3. On the Chromebook, open Settings > Device > Displays.
  4. Select Mirror Built-in Display to show the Chromebook screen on the TV.

From the Displays settings, you can also select the external display and adjust supported options such as resolution and refresh rate. The available settings depend on the Chromebook and display. Google says holding the decrease-brightness key can show the Chromebook screen only on the external display.

Can I connect a Chromebook to a TV wirelessly?

Yes. Google documents using Chromecast or Android TV as a receiver to cast a Chrome tab or the Chromebook’s whole screen. This is screen sharing; Google’s casting instructions do not establish that it provides the same extended-workspace behavior as a wired external display.

  1. Set up a Chromecast or Android TV receiver, and select the TV input it uses. The TV needs an HDMI input; a Chromecast-compatible streaming device is an option if you do not already have a supported receiver.
  2. Make sure the Chromebook is running the newest version of ChromeOS. For the desktop cast-device flow, Google’s steps call for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to be on.
  3. In Chrome, open More > Cast, then choose the receiver and whether to cast the current tab or the whole screen. Google also documents a cast-devices flow from the desktop status area.
  4. When finished, use the cast controls to stop casting.

See Google’s Chromecast setup and casting instructions for Chromebooks for the documented flows. Do not assume every TV has Chromecast built in.

Which connection should you choose?

Option What it does What to check
HDMI cable Connects the Chromebook directly to the TV for a wired display; ChromeOS offers mirroring and supported external-display settings. Both devices need compatible HDMI ports.
Port-matched adapter Connects devices with different video ports, such as DisplayPort output to HDMI input. Match the Chromebook output to the TV input and confirm model-specific video support.
USB-C-to-HDMI adapter Provides a wired connection when the Chromebook’s USB-C port supports video output and the TV has HDMI. USB-C alone does not guarantee video output; the cable or adapter must support the connection.
Chromecast or Android TV Shares a Chrome tab or the whole screen wirelessly. Use a supported receiver, current ChromeOS, and a TV with HDMI input; casting is documented as sharing, not as an extended-workspace setup.

A dock is not necessary for a single TV connection. It may be useful for a multi-display setup, but the number of external monitors depends on the Chromebook; Google recommends checking for Works With Chromebook-certified docks.

USB-C troubleshooting

The TV does not detect the Chromebook

  • Confirm the TV is set to the input where the cable or adapter is connected.
  • Check whether the specific Chromebook port supports video output; not every USB-C port does.
  • Check that the cable or adapter supports the video connection. Google warns that some USB-C cables may be too slow for a monitor or dock.

You see “Cable may not support displays”

Google recommends replacing the USB-C cable with one rated SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or higher for this error. See its Chromebook external-device and cable guidance.

You need more than one external display

Check your Chromebook’s model documentation for its supported display count and dock compatibility. Google notes that the number of monitors available through a dock depends on the Chromebook and recommends Works With Chromebook-certified docks.

Check model compatibility before buying

Chromebook port capabilities, supported resolutions and refresh rates, and external-display limits vary by model. Confirm those details in the device documentation before choosing a cable, adapter, or dock. Google’s Chromebook home-use guide also identifies connecting to a monitor or TV and using Chromecast as home-use options.
