To make game audio quieter during a PS5 Discord call, open the Control Center, select the active Discord voice chat card, and adjust Audio Balance. It changes the relative level of Discord voices and other console audio; PlayStation does not guarantee that it can completely mute either source on every setup.
If you mean people talking in a game’s own voice channel, use Disable Game Chat Audio instead. That silences game chat—not the game’s music or sound effects.

Adjust game audio against Discord voices
- While the Discord call is active, press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select the Discord voice chat card.
- Choose Audio Balance and adjust the mix between Discord voice chat and other audio on the console.
PlayStation describes the control as: “Adjust the audio balance between the voice chat and other audio on your console.” Use it to make one side of the mix less prominent; the documented guidance does not promise a complete mute for either source in every configuration. If the unwanted sound is other players speaking through the game’s voice channel, open Control Center > Sound > Disable Game Chat Audio. This setting applies to game-chat audio only. Game sound effects and music remain separate and are not silenced by this toggle. PlayStation’s PS5 voice chat guidance explains the setting.

Choose the right control for the sound you want to change

The controller’s MUTE button is not a selective game-audio control. PlayStation says it mutes the microphone and turns sound output off to all speakers; press it again to restore the prior state. PlayStation’s audio-output instructions describe its behavior.
Change output routing or overall volume
For a device-routing problem or a change to overall headphone or controller-speaker level, use Settings > Sound > Audio Output to select an output device or headphone output. Use Settings > Sound > Volume for headphone or controller-speaker volume. These affect routing or overall level; PlayStation does not describe them as selective game-audio mute controls. Available options vary by device and configuration. See PlayStation’s audio-output guidance.

Use headset controls only if your model has them
The PlayStation PULSE 3D wireless headset has CHAT/GAME buttons to adjust relative chat and game audio volume. Pressing both buttons together resets the relative level. This is specific to that headset model, not a requirement for PS5 Discord voice chat and not evidence that other headsets have the same controls. PlayStation’s PULSE 3D manual covers those buttons.
If a menu label looks different
Menu labels can vary by language, device configuration, and future system software. If the wording or location differs, check the current labels on your PS5 and use the control that matches the sound source: Discord voices, the game’s voice channel, or game music and effects. PlayStation’s documentation checked on October 7, 2026, confirms the controls above.
