For GTA 6 itself, neither PS5 configuration has a format advantage: Rockstar says the boxed “physical” version contains a download code, not a game disc. You can redeem that code and download the game on either console. Choose a PS5 with a disc drive if you also want to play supported physical PS4 or PS5 games; choose the Digital Edition if you’re happy buying games digitally.
Does the boxed GTA 6 version come on a disc?
No. Rockstar says the physical retail version contains a code for a digital download and that no disc is included in the box. So “physical” describes the boxed offer, not a disc you can insert and play. You’ll need to redeem the code and download the game. Rockstar’s platforms, editions, and versions information also notes region-specific code restrictions; check the terms and buy from a retailer serving the country of your platform account.

Rockstar currently lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. Its store listing gives November 19, 2026 as the announced release date, which is still in the future as of October 7, 2026. See the Rockstar Store listing for the current date and format details.
Can you play GTA 6 on PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes. Rockstar lists PS5 as a platform and describes GTA 6 as available digitally as well as in the code-in-box retail offer. Sony describes the Digital Edition as an all-digital console with no disc drive by default; it plays downloaded games. The code in the boxed offer is redeemed for a download, so it does not require a disc drive.

Which PS5 is better for your GTA 6 plans?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Playing the boxed GTA 6 offer | Either | The box contains a download code, not a disc. You’ll need an internet connection to download the game, and the code may have region restrictions. |
| Playing supported physical PS4 or PS5 games | PS5 with disc drive | Sony says this configuration plays supported PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs and also supports digital downloads. |
| Buying games digitally | Digital Edition can fit | It plays downloaded games and GTA 6 is available digitally. |
| Adding disc support later | Depends on the exact console model | Sony lists a separately sold detachable drive for specified slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. Setup requires internet pairing, and the accessory is not compatible with every Digital Edition model. |
Does the disc-drive PS5 run GTA 6 better?
No performance advantage between these configurations is established in the official information reviewed. The disc drive changes which supported physical media the console can use; it is not evidence of a higher frame rate, better graphics, or different gameplay in GTA 6.

What to check before you buy
- Your existing games: If you own supported PS4 or PS5 game discs, or expect to buy physical games, the disc-drive console offers that flexibility.
- The exact Digital Edition model: If you might add Sony’s detachable drive, confirm that your console model is on Sony’s compatibility list. The drive is sold separately and needs internet pairing during setup.
- Your retailer and account region: Rockstar says code restrictions vary by region, so confirm that the boxed code works with the country of your platform account.
- Local pricing: Compare current console and accessory prices where you live. The available information here does not establish current prices, and the drive’s separate cost can affect the overall comparison.
