Short answer: A PS5 disc game still needs its disc inserted each time you play, even after installation. Lose or damage the disc and that copy loses its normal play check. A digital purchase is tied to the purchasing account and its license, so a lock icon can signal an account, license, network, or sharing issue—not necessarily that the purchase is gone. Subscription games have another condition: membership must be active and the game must remain available.
What changes when you lose access to a disc game?
Sony says to keep the game disc inserted every time you play an installed disc-based game. Installation copies game data to the console, but it does not remove the disc requirement for ordinary authorization. If the disc is lost or unusable, you cannot use that disc copy to pass the check. Disc play also requires a compatible PS5 with a disc drive installed. Check the exact console model before buying or recommending a separate drive; the cited quick-start guide is for CFI-71XX and does not establish compatibility for every PS5 model. What can block a digital game?
A digital purchase relies on the license associated with the account that bought it. If the game shows a lock, start by signing in to that account and checking transaction history. Sony’s game-launch troubleshooting guide treats the lock icon as a reason to check access and licenses, not proof by itself that a purchase has been permanently lost.

Other possible causes include network or PlayStation service problems, a license that needs restoring, or a sharing setup that does not give the current user access. If another account on the console bought the game, that account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting matters. Sony’s support page lists these checks as part of resolving a locked game.
How offline access and sharing work
Sony says that enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play lets anyone using that PS5 play the account holder’s purchased and downloaded games when the console is offline. This helps distinguish an outright digital purchase from a subscription entitlement: sharing applies to the account holder’s purchased and downloaded games, but it does not turn a time-limited or catalog-based entitlement into a permanent purchase. Sony also limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months. That limit is relevant if you need to move account access to another console.

How subscription games differ from purchases
PlayStation Plus is a paid subscription. If a game accessed through the service is locked, Sony advises checking that the membership is active and that the title is still available. A subscription or catalog entitlement is not the same as buying the game outright: access can depend on both membership status and availability. See PlayStation Plus support for service details.

What a disc or purchase cannot guarantee
Neither format guarantees that every online feature will remain available. Sony’s CFI-71XX quick-start guide says, “Service availability is not guaranteed,” and that “Online features of specific games may be withdrawn on reasonable notice.” A disc preserves the disc-based play check, not a publisher’s servers or online services. The same general service caveat applies to a digital copy.

If a digital game shows a lock
- Sign in to the account that purchased the game.
- Check that account’s transaction history for the purchase.
- If access comes through PlayStation Plus, verify that the membership is active and that the game remains available.
- If another user owns the game, check that their Console Sharing and Offline Play setting is enabled on this PS5.
- Check PlayStation service status, then restore licenses using the relevant PlayStation settings and follow Sony’s troubleshooting steps.
If a disc game will not start
- Confirm the disc is present and correctly inserted.
- Confirm the console has a compatible disc drive installed.
- If the game still does not start, follow Sony’s disc-game installation and troubleshooting guidance.
These checks address the normal access rules and common lock or startup issues; they do not establish the outcome of every possible account restriction, permanent access loss, publisher shutdown, or future store change.
