42mm or 46mm: what changes?
Apple offers Series 12 in 42mm and 46mm cases. The 46mm has a larger display, while the 42mm is smaller and lighter in equivalent materials. The measurements and weights below are Apple’s manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

Apple’s other listed case weights vary by material and connectivity. Aluminum GPS + Cellular weighs 31.5g for 42mm and 38.6g for 46mm; titanium weighs 36.5g and 44.9g, respectively. Ceramic weight also varies by finish: the 42mm is 41.7g in Pearl White or 42.8g in Night Blue; the 46mm is 51.3g or 52.9g.
Which Series 12 size should you choose?
Start with 42mm if you prefer a smaller, lighter case
The 42mm is the natural starting point if you want a more compact watch and its published wrist-fit range and your chosen band’s range include your measurements. It has less display area than the 46mm, so consider whether the smaller screen suits how you want to use the watch.

Start with 46mm if screen area is your priority
The 46mm provides 1,196 sq mm of display area, compared with 970 sq mm on the 42mm, and has a larger case. Choose it if you prefer that size and both the case guidance and selected band accommodate your wrist.
If both sizes fit, compare them on your wrist
Apple lists a wrist-fit range of 130–200mm for 42mm and 140–245mm for 46mm. If your measurement falls within both, circumference alone won’t tell you which will look or feel better. Compare the dimensions, screen area and weight, and remember that comfort and appearance are personal preferences; Apple does not publish a study establishing which case looks best on a particular wrist.

How to measure your wrist for a band
Apple recommends precisely measuring around your wrist where the watch will be worn. Use the minimum and maximum wrist range listed for the exact band style and case combination you plan to buy. A case’s published wrist-fit range and a particular band’s size range are related, but they are not interchangeable.
- Measure where the watch will sit. Wrap a flexible measuring tape around your wrist at that point and note the circumference.
- Check the exact band listing. Find its stated minimum and maximum wrist sizes for the Series 12 case size you’re buying. Select a size whose range includes your measurement.
- If using Apple’s printable sizing tool, print at 100%. Do not scale the page. Cut out the tool, place its wider end where the watch will sit, wrap it snugly and read the number indicated by the arrows. If the arrows point to a line, Apple says to choose the smaller of the two closest numbers.
Band sizing depends on the style
There is no single wrist-size chart that applies to every Apple Watch band. Check the specific band’s listing, including its compatibility with the Series 12 case size.

- Sport Band: Choose the case size first, then the band size. Apple says only one Sport Band size is included in the box.
- Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop: Use Apple’s current sizing guide even if you have bought one before; Apple notes that sizing has changed.
- Other band styles: Follow the range shown for that band rather than assuming it matches another style.
For example, Apple’s current listing for the 42mm Modern Buckle gives these ranges: Small, 135–150mm; Medium, 145–165mm; and Large, 160–180mm. Those figures apply to that band listing, not to bands generally.

- Confirm that the band is compatible with your Series 12 case size.
- Check the exact style’s stated wrist range against your measurement.
- If your wrist falls outside that range, choose another size or band style with a range that includes it; don’t assume it will fit.
A band is included with the watch, so an additional band is mainly relevant if you want another style, need a replacement or are looking for a different fit.
