Choose the PS5 Disc Edition if you want to play physical PS5 or supported PS4 game discs, or watch movies on disc. Choose the Digital Edition if you are happy to buy and download games and do not need an optical drive. Before deciding, compare your local console prices and—if considering a Digital Edition plus a separate drive—check the exact console model for compatibility.
What is the practical difference?
The Disc Edition has a disc drive installed. Sony says it supports PS5 and PS4 game discs; a disc must be in a console with a drive to play. The Digital Edition has no drive installed, so games are purchased and downloaded digitally. Both configurations support digital PS5 and PS4 games.

Sony’s digital purchase and download instructions require an internet connection and a PlayStation account. As Sony puts it: “To purchase and download games, you’ll need to connect your console to the internet and sign in with your account.” See Sony’s PlayStation 5 Support.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Disc Edition if you want physical media
- You already own PS5 or supported PS4 game discs, or expect to use them.
- You want the option of playing games from discs you borrow or acquire second-hand. Whether that is cheaper depends on local prices and availability; the format alone does not guarantee savings.
- You want to play supported movie discs, including 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD formats listed for Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive.
Choose the Digital Edition if downloads suit you
- You are comfortable buying games through PlayStation Store and downloading them.
- You do not need to play game or movie discs.
- You prefer a console without an installed optical drive and have checked the local price of the console and games you intend to buy.
Can you add a disc drive to a Digital Edition?
Some slim Digital Edition consoles can use Sony’s detachable drive, but it is not a universal upgrade for every Digital Edition. Sony’s Canada product page identifies CFI-2000/2100 slim groups for this option, while its setup guide covers CFI-2000/7000 model groups. Check the specific instructions and the model number printed on your console before buying; compatibility depends on the model group.

Pairing the detachable drive during setup requires an internet connection. Sony’s setup steps are on its disc drive setup page. The accessory page lists PS5 games, supported PS4 titles, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs as supported media.
How much storage do the listed configurations have?
Sony’s Canada product page lists 1TB for the Disc Edition and 825GB for the Digital Edition. These are listed configuration capacities, not guarantees for every region or PS5 model. System software reserves storage, so usable space is lower; Sony’s cited product page does not state an exact usable-capacity figure.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

Either configuration can expand storage with a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony advises checking its current size and performance requirements and installing current system software before using one. Compatible games and media apps can be used from the expansion. See Sony’s PS5 expandable storage guidance; no particular SSD model is established here as a recommendation.
Compare the real cost before deciding
There is no reliable universal answer to which edition costs less overall: console prices, bundles, game prices, and drive prices vary by retailer and location. Compare the offers available where you live, including the cost of a detachable drive if you are considering one later. Also factor in whether you already own discs and whether you want disc playback. Do not assume the Disc Edition will pay for itself through cheaper games, or that the Digital Edition is always the less expensive choice.
