Xbox Series X|S has broader documented backward compatibility across console generations: it supports Xbox One games plus selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. PS5 focuses on PS4 games, with Sony saying the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable. Neither platform supports every older game, and Sony does not describe PS4-on-PS5 compatibility as emulation. Check the exact game and your console model before relying on a disc or expecting an enhancement.
What “emulation” means in this comparison
Backward compatibility means a newer console can run certain games made for an older console. “Emulation” is a more specific technical description of how software reproduces another system’s behavior; it should not be used as a synonym for every form of backward compatibility.

Sony’s current support page says PS4 games are playable on PS5, but does not call that process emulation or explain its underlying implementation. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire said in June 2020 that backward-compatible games run natively on Xbox Series X hardware, using its CPU, GPU, and SSD. That is Microsoft’s description of its approach, not a promise that every compatible game receives the same performance or visual improvements.

Which generations can each console play?

The difference is generation reach, not a guarantee that every game from a supported generation works. Xbox’s documented range goes further back than PS5’s cited PS4-focused support, but its Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is selective.

Can PS5 play PS3 games or PS4 discs?
PS3 games
PS5 does not support PS3 discs. Do not assume a PS3 disc will work simply because PS5 plays many PS4 games.
PS4 discs
A PS4 disc can be used only with a PS5 model that has a disc drive. The disc must remain inserted to play. PS4 discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition.

Digital PS4 games
Compatible digital PS4 games can be installed on PS5. Sony also describes transferring games over Wi-Fi or accessing them from compatible USB storage. Check the game’s eligibility before assuming a particular title will work.
Can Xbox Series X play Xbox 360 games? What about Series S discs?
Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One games and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. For a digital game you own, check that it appears in Xbox’s compatible-games catalog. For a compatible disc, a console with a disc drive downloads the game to storage, and the disc is still required to play.

Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot read game discs. If your Xbox ownership is on disc, you need a compatible disc-drive console to use that entitlement; having the game listed as backward compatible does not make a Series S able to use a disc.
How to check a game before buying or installing it
- Find the exact game in the platform’s current compatibility information. For PlayStation, use Sony’s PS5 backward compatibility page. For Xbox, use the Xbox backward compatibility catalog. These live lists can change.
- Match the game to your ownership format. Confirm whether you own or plan to buy the digital version or a disc. A disc entitlement requires a drive-equipped console on the relevant platform.
- Check the console model. PS4 discs require a PS5 with a disc drive; Xbox Series S cannot read discs.
- Check the individual title’s behavior and features. Compatibility does not mean every original feature or enhancement is available. Sony warns that some PS4 functionality may be unavailable and that some titles may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5.
Do older games get better graphics or performance?
Sometimes, but improvements are title-specific. Sony says select PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, which can provide higher or smoother frame rates. It also advises trying a game before purchasing add-ons intended to improve the experience.

Xbox lists FPS Boost for supported games, increased resolution up to 4K for selected titles, and Auto HDR for supported SDR games. These are possible features, not universal upgrades. Check the game’s listing to see what is supported rather than assuming every compatible title gets a higher frame rate, resolution, or HDR.

Sony’s current support page describes compatibility for the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games and identifies a small set of PS4-only titles. The list is subject to change and excludes demos, media, and non-game applications. It should not be treated as a permanent count.
At PS5’s 2020 launch, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, said: “We are focused on the huge catalog of games on PlayStation 4, and we’re pleased that more than 99% of PS4 games will be playable on PS5 on day one.” That was a launch-era estimate, not a newly measured current percentage.
Microsoft reported in October 2020 that its Xbox backward-compatibility team had conducted over 500,000 hours of gameplay testing in the year before Series X|S launched. That is Microsoft’s reported testing effort for that period, not an annual or current cumulative total.
Which one suits your game library?
- You own PS4 games: PS5 offers broad PS4 compatibility. Verify the title, and make sure your console can use the format you own.
- You want access to older Xbox generations: Series X|S reaches Xbox One and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Verify the title; if you own discs, choose a console with a disc drive.
- You want a specific older game: Start with its exact listing, not the platform’s headline generation range. Compatibility, disc support, and enhancements are separate questions.
