Sony has not published a list of video or audio codecs supported by a PS5 web browser. Its FAQ says the console has no dedicated browser app, so there is no official browser codec matrix to quote. The format list Sony does publish covers local playback from a USB drive in Media Gallery, which is a different feature. This article keeps the two apart.
Does the PS5 have a browser with a documented codec list?
No. In PS5: The Ultimate FAQ (PlayStation.Blog, published November 9, 2020), Sony answers the question about a web browser with: “No, the PS5 system doesn’t include a dedicated web browser app.” (Sony FAQ)

That statement is from the launch FAQ. It does not rule out every web view embedded inside another app or system screen. Sony’s official pages do not identify the codecs for any such surface, and they give no system-software-version-specific browser matrix. Support for H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1, AAC, Opus or anything else in a web context is therefore undocumented, and it should not be inferred from the USB list below or from the console’s hardware.

What Sony does publish: USB Media Gallery formats
Sony’s support page on playing video and music from discs and USB drives lists the following for PS5 local playback (PlayStation Support):

- The maximum video resolution Sony lists for this path is 3840 × 2160.
- Media Gallery does not play copyright-protected files.
- Some content distributed over the internet has playback restrictions.
This table describes files played from a USB drive. A file that plays from USB may or may not play on a web page, and nothing Sony publishes says it will.
What about streaming services?
Sony treats streaming services as apps reached from the TV & Video area, and says the playback steps vary by service (PlayStation Support). Each app handles its own playback, so an app’s capabilities say nothing about general web codec support.

How to use this information
- If you want to watch your own files, use the USB list: put H.264/AAC in MP4 or MKV, or VP9/Opus in WebM, within the limits above.
- If you want to know whether a specific web video will play, Sony offers no guarantee. Only a version-specific test of the actual web surface on your console could answer it, and none is documented officially.
- If the video is DRM-protected, USB Media Gallery will not play it regardless of format.
