Connect a DualSense controller to a PS5 with a USB-C cable, or connect a DUALSHOCK 4 to a PS4 with its USB cable. Both can charge while the console is on; charging in rest mode requires USB power to be enabled in the console’s settings. The indicators and menu paths differ by controller generation.
Charge a DualSense controller on PS5
- Connect the controller to a PS5 USB Type-C port using the included cable or another cable that complies with USB standards. Sony’s PS5 charging instructions cover charging from the console.
- To charge in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Set Supply Power to USB Ports to Always or 3 Hours. On CFI-2000 model group consoles, Adaptive is also available; Sony says it adjusts USB charging time based on remaining battery to save power.
- To check the battery, open Accessories in the control center. Sony says the battery icon animates while charging. In rest mode, the controller slowly blinks orange; its light bar turns off when charging is complete.
You can also connect a DualSense to a computer or another USB device with a USB-compliant cable. Sony cautions that some USB chargers may not charge it, so use the console or try another supported USB source if charging does not start. See Sony’s DualSense support instructions.

Charge a DUALSHOCK 4 controller on PS4
- Connect the controller to the PS4 with its included USB cable. Sony says it can charge while the console is on or in rest mode.
- For rest-mode charging, open Settings > Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. If you choose 3 Hours, the PS4 stops supplying USB power after three hours.
- To check the battery, press and hold the PS button to open the Quick Menu. The battery icon blinks during charging. In rest mode, the light bar slowly blinks orange and turns off when the battery is full.
Sony estimates that a DUALSHOCK 4 with no charge remaining takes approximately two hours to charge. If it does not charge properly, follow Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting steps, including its instructions for resetting the controller.

DualSense Charging Station for PS5
Sony’s DualSense Charging Station instructions say to align the controller’s charging terminals with the station connector. Sony estimates approximately three hours to charge one or two DualSense controllers with no charge remaining. That estimate applies to the station, not cable charging.

DUALSHOCK 4 Charging Station for PS4
The separate DUALSHOCK 4 Charging Station instructions say to align the station connector with the controller’s extension port and press the controller down until it clicks. Its light bar slowly blinks orange while charging and turns off when full. Sony estimates approximately two hours from empty for this controller.
Sony’s accessories listing includes charging accessories, but availability can vary by region and change over time. If replacing a missing or damaged cable, check that its connector ends fit both the controller and power source; not every USB device or charger will charge a DualSense.

If the controller will not charge
- Check the connection: Confirm the cable is firmly connected and has the correct connector for the controller.
- Try another USB-compliant cable or source: A cable or charger may be unsuitable or faulty. For DualSense, test the console’s USB port or another USB device that supports charging.
- Check rest-mode power: If charging stops when the console enters rest mode, verify that Supply Power to USB Ports is enabled. On PS4, the three-hour option intentionally cuts USB power after three hours.
- Reset a DUALSHOCK 4 if needed: Use Sony’s linked troubleshooting instructions if the controller still does not charge properly.
