QSSR vs. PSSR at a glance
| Feature | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Associated console | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| How Sony describes it | A streamlined neural network with a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. | An upscaling feature that analyzes each game image pixel by pixel; Sony calls it the gold standard on PS5 Pro. |
| Announced support | Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first PS5 titles to receive QSSR as an additional graphics option. | Sony said in March 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 PS5 Pro titles at that time. |
| What to expect visually | Sony and the named developers describe improvements to detail and image stability, but no controlled comparison quantifies the result. | Sony says upgraded PSSR improves image stability, clarity in fine details, and consistency across supported titles. Results vary by title. |
These descriptions come from Sony’s October 1, 2026 QSSR announcement, its March 16, 2026 upgraded-PSSR announcement, and the PS5 Pro product page. The “more than 50” figure is specific to Sony’s March announcement, not a current title count.

Why Sony has two AI upscaling tiers
Upscaling reconstructs an image at a higher output resolution from rendered image data. Sony describes PSSR as analyzing each game image pixel by pixel as it upscales. For the standard PS5, Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation to maximize performance on that console.
The distinction is the target hardware and implementation goal—not a claim that the two technologies use identical resources or produce identical results. Sony calls PSSR the gold standard on PS5 Pro and frames QSSR as a separate performance tier for PS5. Its announcement does not quantify the gap in image quality, processing cost, resolution, or frame rate.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
What Sony says each feature improves
QSSR on PS5
Sony says QSSR brings improvements to image detail and stability on PS5. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine, including Madripoor and Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said it resolves fine character and environment detail with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer impressions, not independent controlled image tests.
Upgraded PSSR on PS5 Pro
Sony says the upgraded PSSR improves image stability, fine-detail clarity, and consistency across supported titles. In March 2026, Sony also described an optional setting for existing compatible games: Mark Cerny, Lead Architect of PS5 and PS5 Pro, said selecting “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in Settings on PS5 Pro lets players experience the new PSSR with PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. Sony cautions that results vary by title.
Game support determines whether you can use it
QSSR is a library Sony says will be available broadly to PlayStation developers, but that does not mean every PS5 game will support it. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles to receive QSSR as an additional graphics option. Availability in other games depends on developers adding support.

Which matters more when choosing a console?
If you are comparing the standard PS5 with PS5 Pro, QSSR does not make the standard console equivalent to the Pro. The systems have different performance targets, and Sony has not provided evidence that QSSR matches PSSR’s results across games. PSSR is the feature Sony associates with PS5 Pro; QSSR is the new AI upscaling library announced for PS5.
For a particular game, the practical question is whether it supports the relevant feature and which graphics mode you prefer. A game’s options may involve a choice between image quality and performance, but Sony’s announcements do not establish one outcome across titles. Treat developer comments as useful context about the named games, not a guarantee of a visible improvement in every scene or on every display.
What has not been established
Sony’s announcements describe the technologies and intended benefits, but do not provide a controlled head-to-head test using the same game scenes, display, and settings. They also do not quantify a universal resolution or frame-rate uplift for QSSR or a numerical quality advantage for PSSR. There is therefore no evidence here for declaring one the universal image-quality winner.
