It depends on the game and mode. Native rendering avoids reconstruction, but can use GPU time that might otherwise go to higher frame rates or visual effects. AI upscaling can deliver a sharp high-resolution output from a lower-resolution render, but results vary with the source image, motion, fine detail and the game’s implementation. Compare the same game mode in motion—not just the “4K” label.
What “native resolution” and “upscaled” mean
Internal resolution is the resolution at which a game renders before any upscaling. It may change dynamically as the scene’s demands change. Output resolution is what the game sends to the display after any reconstruction. A 4K output therefore does not prove that the game rendered every pixel at native 4K.

Native resolution means rendering at the stated output resolution without an upscaler reconstructing missing output pixels. It does not mean the image is otherwise unprocessed, nor does it guarantee that every scene will look sharper.
Sony describes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), the AI-based upscaler associated with PS5 Pro, as analyzing game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them. Sony’s March 2026 update says its revised PSSR improves stability, fine-detail clarity and performance consistency in supported games; those are Sony’s claims about supported titles, not a guarantee for every game.

Ubisoft’s explanation for Assassin’s Creed Shadows uses 1080p upscaled to 2160p as an example and notes that reducing render resolution can improve frame rate at a cost to image clarity, with possible artifacts. It also explains that dynamic resolution can adjust the render resolution as GPU demand changes. That is an explanation of one game’s approach, not a recommended setting for every PS5 title. How to judge image quality in a game
Compare the same game and mode
Compare like with like. “Performance,” “Fidelity” and enhanced-mode labels are not standardized: a mode may change resolution, frame rate, ray tracing and other settings together. A sharper still image does not tell you what the full mode gives up or gains.

Check fine detail while the image moves
Pan the camera across foliage, fences, hair, wires or other fine geometry, then watch for shimmer, flicker, breakup, trails or detail that looks unstable. Upscaling quality can be more apparent in motion than in a screenshot. Sony says the 2026 PSSR revision improves stability and fine-detail clarity in supported games, but performance in a particular title still depends on that title’s implementation.
Look beyond the output-resolution label
Find out whether the game uses a fixed or dynamic internal resolution, if that information is documented. A game can output 4K from a lower render resolution, and a developer may raise the base resolution on PS5 Pro while retaining dynamic scaling to help keep performance stable.

Weigh frame rate and visual features
Ask what the mode does with its rendering budget. A lower internal resolution with upscaling may support a higher frame rate or leave room for features such as ray tracing, lighting or added detail. Compare documented or measured frame-rate behavior alongside the image; resolution alone cannot identify the better overall mode.
Keep the viewing setup consistent
Use the same display, output resolution, picture settings and viewing distance for both modes. Sony notes that PS5 Pro enhancements vary by game and that a compatible display is needed to experience them. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.

What the PS5 Pro examples show—and what they do not
Sony reported that PSSR had been used in more than 50 titles as of February 27, 2026. That count indicates adoption, not the internal resolution or image quality of any individual game. Sony’s PSSR announcement.

Sony’s September 2024 developer overview included a Naughty Dog example of a PS5 Pro mode rendering at 1440p, upscaling to 4K with PSSR and targeting 60 fps. It is a game-specific example, not a PS5 Pro specification or a promise about other titles. Sony’s developer overview.

Housemarque says the PS5 Pro version of Saros raises its base render resolution before upscaling and still uses dynamic resolution to help keep frame rate stable. The studio describes its Pro image as sharper in scene-to-scene comparisons and says upgraded PSSR makes it difficult to distinguish from native 4K. What QSSR means for PS5
On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), describing it as a performance tier of AI upscaling coming to PS5. Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first titles to use it. The announcement does not establish final rollout status, the games’ final options or support across the PS5 library; check each game’s current release notes for those details.
