Xbox Series S is digital-only, and some Series X configurations are all-digital too. Before buying, verify the exact console model and check whether the games you care about are supported.
Which Xbox consoles can play physical discs?
Xbox Series S cannot play physical discs. Microsoft describes it as a console for digital games only. Xbox Series X is available in both disc-drive and all-digital configurations, so the name “Series X” alone does not confirm that a particular console can use your collection. Check the configuration details on the specific product listing and Microsoft’s Xbox console comparison.

Will your older Xbox discs work on Series X?
Not necessarily. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable, but compatibility is not universal. Check each important title in the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalog before deciding which console to buy.

For a supported disc-based backward-compatible game, inserting the disc starts a download to the console. The disc must remain in the drive to play the game afterward. A disc is therefore not necessarily a self-contained installer, and an all-digital console cannot use a disc as proof of ownership even if a digital version of that game is supported. Xbox describes backward compatibility as free for selected titles; a download is required and features vary by game.
What enhancements might backward-compatible games get?
Xbox says select backward-compatible games can benefit from higher resolution, faster frame rates, and/or improved textures. These are possibilities, not guarantees for every game in your collection; the specific title determines which features, if any, apply. See Xbox’s backward-compatibility information for its published details.

How to check before you buy
- Verify the console configuration. On the product listing, confirm that the exact Xbox Series X model says it has a disc drive. Do not infer this from “Series X” alone; Microsoft lists all-digital configurations too.
- Make a list of must-play discs. Check every title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog. Compatibility is title-specific, not a promise that every game from every Xbox generation will work.
- Account for downloads and disc checks. For supported disc-based games, plan to download the game and keep the disc available for play.
- Consider storage separately. If installed-game capacity is a concern, Microsoft lists an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card that connects to the dedicated port and adds storage with the console’s custom SSD experience. It does not add a disc drive to a digital-only console; check Microsoft’s console comparison for its storage information.
Xbox’s backward-compatibility page reports more than 500,000 hours of testing for Series X|S gameplay and quality standards. That is a Microsoft-reported testing figure, not an independent test result, and it does not mean every disc is compatible.
