No—not directly. A PS4 sends video through its HDMI OUT port; it has no direct composite-video output for the red, white, and yellow RCA plugs on an older TV. You can use an active HDMI-to-composite converter with a composite-equipped TV, or use PS Remote Play on a supported networked device. Optical output, where present, carries audio only. Sony’s setup instructions and PS4 connection guidance describe the HDMI connection.
Can you hook up a PS4 without HDMI?
Not by connecting the console directly to RCA, component, or optical inputs. The PS4’s video output is digital HDMI; a cable that merely changes the connector shape cannot convert it to an analog signal. Sony’s North American PS4 FAQ says the console’s video and audio are transmitted over HDMI.

How to connect a PS4 to an older TV with red, white, and yellow cables
- Check the TV inputs. Confirm it has composite inputs, typically yellow for video and red and white for stereo audio. If it has HDMI, use a standard HDMI cable instead.
- Choose an active HDMI-to-composite converter. It must take HDMI as its input and output the analog video format your TV accepts. Look for any required USB or power adapter. A passive “HDMI-to-RCA cable” only changes plugs and does not do the necessary digital-to-analog conversion.
- Connect the equipment. Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT to the converter’s HDMI input, then connect the converter’s composite outputs to the matching TV inputs. Power the converter if required and select the corresponding input on the TV.
- Check compatibility if there is no picture or sound. The converter’s supported video format and HDCP handling matter. No particular converter is established here as guaranteed to work with every PS4, game, or display.
Composite video is an older analog connection, so the picture is limited by the TV and connection format. The converter can make a connection possible; it does not turn a composite television into an HDMI display.

What to check if an HDMI-to-RCA converter shows no picture
Confirm the signal direction and TV input
Make sure the device is an HDMI-to-composite converter, not a composite-to-HDMI unit. Check that the PS4 is connected to the converter’s HDMI input, the RCA plugs are in the matching TV inputs, and the TV is set to that input.
Check HDCP compatibility
Sony says HDCP is enabled by default for PS4 HDMI output. A device that is not HDCP-compatible may prevent video and audio output. For gameplay, HDCP can be turned off at Settings > System; changing the setting closes applications. This is not a universal converter fix, and it will not allow protected video playback: Blu-ray, DVD, and DRM streaming playback require HDCP to be enabled. See Sony’s HDCP instructions.

Can optical audio replace HDMI?
No. The DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port, when a PS4 model has one, sends audio to compatible equipment; it does not send video to a TV. Sony’s audio settings documentation notes that CUH-2000 series consoles do not have an optical output. Rear-port layouts vary by PS4 model, so check the ports on your console rather than assuming it has optical audio.

Can you play without a working HDMI connection using Remote Play?
Possibly, if Remote Play is already configured or you can enable it and complete setup. It mirrors the PS4 screen to a supported computer or mobile device over a network; it does not create an analog output for a television. PlayStation’s current connection guidance covers supported devices and setup requirements, including console availability, account sign-in, network conditions, and software. Some games and device-specific features are not supported, and disc or protected streaming playback may be restricted.

What if the PS4 HDMI port is damaged?
If the console socket is visibly damaged or a known-good cable and display input still produce no picture, an RCA cable will not bypass the fault: the PS4 has no direct analog video output. Follow Sony’s screen-connection troubleshooting and repair route at PlayStation Repairs, or consult a qualified console repair provider.
