To use a PS4 DualShock 4 controller on a Windows PC, connect it with a data-capable Micro-USB cable. If it charges but Windows does not detect it, try a cable that supports data and another USB port before installing software. Windows may recognize the controller while a particular game still needs Steam Input or DS4Windows.
Connect a PS4 controller to a PC with USB
- Connect the DualShock 4 to the PC with a compatible Micro-USB cable. Sony lists this as a supported PC connection method in its PlayStation controller guidance.
- Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect it. Microsoft says Windows 11 automatically detects many USB-connected controllers and installs the necessary drivers; see Microsoft’s Windows controller connection instructions.
- Test the buttons and sticks in Windows device settings or Steam’s controller input test before launching a game.
- If the test registers input, open the game and check its controller settings.
Why the controller may charge but not connect
A light or charging indicator confirms that the cable supplies power, not that it carries data. Some Micro-USB cables are charge-only. DS4Windows’ controller detection troubleshooting guide identifies this as a possible reason a wired controller is not detected.

- Test again in Windows or Steam before changing drivers or installing remapping software.
Windows detects the controller, but a game does not
Detection by Windows does not mean every game will accept the DualShock 4 directly. Microsoft notes that some PlayStation-controller and game combinations need Steam Input or DS4Windows for full compatibility. If input works in the Windows or Steam test but not in one game, check that game’s controller settings first, then consider one of those input layers.
Do you need DS4Windows?
No, not for every setup. Start with the wired connection and test the controller in Windows or Steam. Use DS4Windows only if the game or application does not handle the controller as needed; it is third-party software, and behavior can vary by release. Steam Input is another option for supported games played through Steam.

Wired USB, Bluetooth, or Sony’s wireless adapter
USB is the direct choice when you want a wired setup. Sony also documents Bluetooth and its dedicated DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor as connection options. Bluetooth requires a Bluetooth-capable PC; the Sony adapter is an optional accessory for wireless use, not a requirement for connecting by cable. Official guidance does not establish that one connection method is universally faster or more reliable.
