To connect a PlayStation 2 to a smart TV, match the console’s analog AV output to an input the TV supports. Use the PS2 composite cable with yellow video and red/white audio jacks when the TV has matching inputs. If it has a model-specific AV mini-jack, use the breakout cable made for that TV. A TV with component inputs can use a compatible PS2 component AV cable; a TV with HDMI only needs an active analog-to-HDMI converter. Turn off the TV before connecting, then select the input you used and switch on the console.
Check the TV’s inputs before connecting
The PS2 sends video and audio from its AV MULTI OUT connector through an analog cable. Look at the TV’s input panel and check its manual to identify the available connections. Smart TVs do not all use the same ports, and some models use a small, model-specific AV input instead of separate yellow, red, and white jacks.

- Composite AV: yellow video input plus red and white audio inputs.
- TV-specific AV input: a multi-pole mini-jack that requires the compatible RCA breakout lead for that TV model.
- Component video: component video inputs for use with a PS2-compatible component AV cable.
- HDMI only: an active analog-to-HDMI converter is required to translate the PS2’s analog signal to HDMI’s digital format. A passive adapter that merely changes the plug shape does not do that conversion.
Sony’s BRAVIA connectivity guide distinguishes HDMI as digital and composite as analog. Check the specific TV manual before buying a breakout lead or converter.

- Turn off the TV before making connections, as Sony’s PlayStation 2 User Guide advises.
- Connect the cable to the PS2’s AV MULTI OUT port.
- Connect yellow to the TV’s VIDEO IN, red to AUDIO R, and white to AUDIO L. If the TV has a multi-pole mini-jack AV input, connect the RCA plugs to the TV-compatible breakout lead, then connect that lead to the TV.
- Turn on the TV and choose the input connected to the PS2, often labeled AV or Video. Then turn on the console. The PS2 guide says to set the TV to the appropriate video input mode.
Sony’s composite connection guide shows the color-coded RCA route and the breakout-cable option. Port shape and compatibility depend on the TV model.
#1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
- 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
- POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
- IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.
Use component video when the TV supports it
If the TV has component video inputs, connect a PlayStation 2-compatible component AV cable to the console and the matching TV inputs. Component is a separate analog connection type from composite; do not try to connect its plugs to unrelated jacks based only on color.
If the component picture is unstable, open the PS2’s System Configuration and set Component Video Out to Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr for component AV inputs, as specified in Sony’s PS2 Quick Reference. Sony’s console guide places the supplied AV cable below S VIDEO and component AV in a qualitative picture-quality guide; it does not provide a measured result, and actual picture quality varies with the equipment.

What to do if the TV has HDMI only
The PS2’s AV output is analog, while HDMI is digital, so a TV with HDMI inputs alone cannot accept the PS2 signal through a passive plug adapter. Use a compatible active PS2 analog-to-HDMI converter, following its instructions for the PS2 input, power, and TV connection. Confirm the converter’s input compatibility and power requirements before purchase; no particular converter’s performance is established here.

Troubleshoot a missing or unstable picture
- No picture: Confirm the console is powered on, the cable is seated, and the TV is set to the input connected to the PS2. Sony’s Quick Reference lists input selection and cable checks among the first steps.
- Component image is unstable: Check that Component Video Out is set to Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr when using component AV inputs.
- No yellow, red, or white jacks: Look for a model-specific AV input and check the TV manual for its compatible breakout lead. If the TV has HDMI only, use an active converter instead.
- Colors or labels do not match: Verify the port functions in both manuals rather than assuming compatibility from connector color alone.
