A PS2’s SCPH number alone cannot confirm whether a modchip will work. Check the console’s complete model number, the GH-xxx motherboard revision inside it, and the exact chip variant; then match all three to a board-specific wiring diagram. A diagram for a nearby board revision is not enough to establish compatibility.
Which modchip works with your PS2 model?
Compatibility is a match between the console’s motherboard and the particular chip variant—not simply a match between a chip name and “PS2.” Specialist installation references show why: one console model can be fitted with more than one motherboard revision, and different modchip generations may not support every board.

For example, William Quade’s Modbo V1 installation guide identifies SCPH-30001 with a GH-004 board as an NTSC-U/C example and warns that newer Modbo 4.0, 5.0 and 750 variants may not be compatible with the V1 board. That example is not a universal compatibility list: verify the actual board and exact chip you have.

- Read the console label. Record the full SCPH model number, including its regional suffix. Treat it as a starting point, not proof of motherboard compatibility.
- Identify the board marking. The GH-xxx revision is printed on the motherboard, so checking it requires opening the console. If you cannot confidently identify the marking, do not choose a chip based only on the exterior label.
- Find a diagram for that exact board. Use a board-specific installation diagram rather than assuming that instructions for a similar SCPH model or adjacent board revision apply. The Matrix Infinity diagram index separates revisions and includes revision-specific notes.
- Confirm the chip variant. “Modbo” covers multiple versions. Check that the documentation supports both your exact GH-xxx board and your chip generation; the existence of a diagram for a board does not by itself prove that every chip variant works on it.
Check for board-specific protection notes
Some revisions have additional repair or protection considerations. The Matrix Infinity index flags a Romeo Mod/LA-chip protection note for V9 and V10/V11 boards, and a laser-fix requirement for V12. Treat these as prompts to consult the exact diagram and reliable repair documentation—not as generic instructions to apply to every PS2.

Compare modchip options before buying
| What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact GH-xxx motherboard revision | A single SCPH model can correspond to more than one board revision. |
| Exact chip generation or variant | Compatibility can differ between variants sold under the same family name. |
| Board- and region-appropriate wiring diagram | It gives installation guidance for the board you have, rather than a nearby revision. |
| Revision-specific repair or protection notes | Some boards have additional notes that should be checked for that revision only. |
| Installer skill and risk | A technically compatible chip can still be a poor choice if the installation is beyond the installer’s ability. |
Commercial listings may use inconsistent naming or refer to clone chips. The cited references do not establish the authenticity, current stock, or compatibility of any particular live listing, so do not treat a seller’s broad “fits PS2” claim as verification.

Understand the installation risk—and alternatives
For the specific use case of dumping a PS2 BIOS, the PCSX2 project rates modchip installation as “Expert” difficulty and “High” risk, and lists documentation, wires, tools and a soldering iron among the materials. Its BIOS-dumping guide recommends FreeMcBoot or FreeDVDBoot as software-based alternatives for that task. Those methods are not necessarily substitutes for a chip when the goal is something else.
If you cannot identify the board, find a diagram for the exact combination, or solder confidently, pause and seek help from someone experienced in PS2 board-level work. Do not rely on a guessed revision or a generic wiring image.

Replacement optical parts are a separate compatibility question
If by “replacement” you mean a drive assembly or laser rather than a modchip, check the optical-drive part separately. The ConsoleMods PS2 model-differences reference documents different Slim drive assemblies and compatible laser families; it does not support assuming that every PS2 laser or drive component is interchangeable. Confirm the precise model family and drive assembly before ordering a replacement part.

The Matrix Infinity index and Modbo guide are useful specialist references for identifying diagrams and variant-specific cautions, but they are not Sony compatibility certifications. Sony’s Japanese PS2 accessories compatibility page covers accessories; it does not certify third-party modchips. PCSX2’s documentation addresses BIOS dumping and relative method risks, not a modchip product-compatibility list.
