What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a VPN by checking what the provider collects and shares, testing how it performs on your own connection, confirming it supports your devices, and comparing the full cost—including renewal terms. A VPN changes the route your traffic takes; it does not make you anonymous, and it makes the VPN provider a party you must trust.
What a VPN changes—and what it does not
A VPN app routes your device’s traffic through servers operated by the VPN provider. Depending on the app and its configuration, traffic between your device and the VPN server may be encrypted. That can limit what someone monitoring your local Wi-Fi connection can see, but your traffic now passes through the VPN provider. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on VPN apps recommends examining the provider’s privacy policy, terms, permissions, and data-sharing practices.

A VPN can change who handles or observes parts of your connection; it does not erase your identity from the websites you visit. Sites may recognize you through an account, cookies, information you enter, or other identifiers. As the FTC puts it: “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.”

The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe because encryption is now widespread on websites; look for HTTPS or a lock symbol in your browser. A VPN may still suit a particular privacy or network need, but it is not a substitute for understanding the service you trust.

How to assess privacy and security
Read the provider’s disclosures for what it collects, why it collects it, how long it keeps information, and whether it shares data with third parties. Check whether the policy discusses app telemetry as well as VPN traffic. Review the app’s permissions and ask whether each makes sense for its function. The FTC warns that not all VPN apps encrypt information and that some may share data with third parties, so an app-store claim alone is not proof.
Use technical features as questions to verify, not as a collection of reassuring badges. Privacy Guides’ VPN comparison criteria include modern protocols such as WireGuard, a functional kill switch, open-source clients, and published independent audits. These are that organization’s evaluation criteria, not a universal certification standard. Confirm that the relevant protections work in the app and operating system you will use.

Read audit claims narrowly
An independent audit is evidence about a defined scope at a particular point in time—not proof that every app, server, feature, or future business practice has been examined. If a provider cites an audit, look for the report itself and check who conducted it, when it was completed, what was in scope, and what findings are available. A “no logs” promise is not proof by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to compare VPN speed
Routing through another network can affect performance, but the result depends on your baseline connection, distance to the selected server, server load, protocol, device, and the provider’s implementation. There is no dependable universal slowdown percentage or protocol that will be fastest for everyone.

- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Record how your usual activities perform with the VPN off, using your normal device, location, network, and destinations.
- Turn the VPN on and repeat under comparable conditions. Try a nearby server and any relevant destination you expect to use.
- Check the tasks that matter to you—such as browsing, calls, downloads, or streaming—instead of relying only on a speed-test result.
- Repeat at another time if performance varies. Treat the results as your own experience, not as a published benchmark or a guarantee of future service.
Do not assume a VPN will always speed up a connection, cause a fixed reduction, prevent buffering, or guarantee access to a streaming service. If you want to evaluate a service before committing, check its current trial or refund terms before paying.
Check device support and connection limits
List the devices you actually want to protect, such as a computer, phone, or tablet. For each candidate, confirm that it offers an app for the operating system you use, then check the plan’s simultaneous connection limit and how the provider defines a connection. These terms can differ and change; Privacy Guides includes simultaneous connections among its provider comparison factors.

When a router VPN client may help
If a device cannot run a VPN app, a compatible home router may be able to route selected devices through a third-party VPN. For example, TP-Link’s router documentation describes support for selected devices and lists OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, and WireGuard; WireGuard is limited to select models. This is manufacturer documentation for TP-Link products, not a compatibility promise for all routers.

Compare the real price, not just the discount
For each plan, check the amount charged now, billing duration, renewal price, taxes or other charges, refund or trial window, connection limit, and whether the features you need are included. A displayed monthly equivalent may represent a longer upfront billing term. Provider offers change, so verify the current checkout and renewal terms for your region before subscribing.
A free plan can be reasonable if its data allowance, speed, server availability, and features fit your needs. Free versus paid does not establish whether a service is trustworthy: check its privacy and data-sharing practices either way.
Use one comparison checklist for every candidate
Apply the same questions to each service so a prominent discount or marketing claim does not overshadow a meaningful difference.
