For playing PS3 classics on a PS5, PlayStation Plus Premium is the documented route: eligible PS3 games in Sony’s Classics Catalog are streamed, not downloaded as PS3 software. Buying is a genuine alternative only when the specific game has a supported PS5 version or other PS5-compatible purchase option in your region. So the choice depends on the title, your connection, and whether you will use Premium’s other benefits—not on a universal subscription-versus-purchase price.
First, know what “playing PS3 classics on PS5” means
Sony says that “The Classics Catalog also features a wide selection of classic PlayStation 3 games that are available via streaming only.” That describes the PS3 games offered through the catalog: you stream them to the console rather than download and install the PS3 versions on PS5. Sony’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ explains the catalog access model.

Premium is the relevant membership tier because Sony lists both the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming among its benefits. On PS5, the documented process is to find an eligible title in the Classics Catalog and select Stream. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus support guide and instructions for accessing the Classics Catalog.

- You want several eligible games. A subscription may make sense if the titles you want are currently included and you expect to play more than one. Catalog inclusion and availability can change, so check each game before subscribing.
- You will use other Premium benefits. Sony’s US plan comparison includes the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming in Premium. Count those other benefits only if they matter to you; they do not make an unavailable PS3 game accessible.
- You are comfortable streaming. Streaming avoids downloading the game, but your experience depends on your connection and tolerance for latency or interruptions. Sony’s US support guide specifies a broadband minimum of 5 Mbps; it says 15 Mbps is needed for 1080p when the game supports that resolution. Those are service thresholds, not a guarantee of consistently smooth play.
During streaming, Sony notes that queues may occur and that broadcasting, Share Play, and Remote Play are unavailable. The same support guide says game mode on a compatible TV may improve the experience.

When buying a game is the better fit
Buying can be preferable if the exact game has a current PS5-native or otherwise supported PS5 purchase option in your region and you want access to that edition without relying on the Classics Catalog. Check the edition and platform carefully: a PS3 disc or a PS3 Store purchase should not be assumed to work on PS5.
A purchase is also a different kind of access from a subscription. Premium access is subject to membership and catalog terms; do not treat it as a permanent standalone purchase or assume a title will stay in the catalog. Conversely, only compare buying with Premium when the exact game has an edition you can actually play on PS5.

Compare the options for your game and region
| What to compare | PS Plus Premium | Buying a game |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | The PS3 title must currently appear in the Classics Catalog for your account region. | A supported PS5 edition or other PS5-compatible purchase option must currently be sold in your region. |
| How you play | PS3 Classics Catalog games are streamed; they are not installed as PS3 software on PS5. | Depends on the specific supported edition. Do not assume a PS3 disc or PS3 Store version runs on PS5. |
| Cost | Use the current local Premium price for the billing period you plan to keep it. | Use the current local price for the exact compatible edition. |
| Other benefits | May be worthwhile if you will also use Premium’s other included benefits. | Compare the game purchase on its own; do not assign value to unrelated benefits. |
| Access expectations | Access follows membership and catalog terms; inclusion can change. | Buying is not the same access arrangement as a catalog subscription, but compatibility still depends on the edition and platform. |
There is no reliable universal break-even price or number of games: the title, country, current store price, subscription duration, and any promotion all affect the calculation. Check the current Premium price and billing terms in your local PlayStation Store, then compare them with the exact compatible edition’s listing.
Check access before you pay
- Check your account region. Sony’s PS5 cloud-streaming information lists supported countries. Availability is regional and can change.
- Look for the game in the live Classics Catalog. Confirm that the specific PS3 title is currently listed for your region; not every historical PS3 game is included.
- Check the purchase listing separately. If you prefer buying, confirm the listing is for a PS5-native or otherwise PS5-compatible edition—not merely a PS3 version.
- Assess your connection and play style. Compare your broadband with Sony’s stated streaming thresholds, and consider that a minimum speed does not promise a reliable experience. Streaming may also involve queues and the feature restrictions described above.
- Compare the actual terms. Use current local prices, subscription duration, and any applicable promotion. Do not base the decision on a generic break-even estimate.
Verdict
Choose Premium if the PS3 classics you want are in your regional catalog, you accept streaming, and you will get enough value from the membership. Choose a purchase only when that specific game has a PS5-compatible edition available to buy and you prefer that access model. If neither condition is met, the PS3 version is not automatically playable on PS5 just because you own it.
