PS Plus Monthly Games vs. Game Catalog: What’s the Difference?

Monthly Games are added to your library and require an active membership to play. The Game Catalog is a rotating library included with Extra and Premium.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monthly Games are titles you add to your library during the monthly offer; you can play them while your PlayStation Plus membership is active. The Game Catalog is a rotating library of games you can browse and play with an Extra or Premium membership, as long as each title remains available. Extra and Premium include both benefits; Essential includes Monthly Games but not the Game Catalog.

How Monthly Games and the Game Catalog differ

Feature Monthly Games Game Catalog
How it works PlayStation offers a selection each month. Add a title to your library to access it through your membership. Browse an on-demand selection and download a currently available title.
Included plans Essential, Extra and Premium Extra and Premium
What limits access You must have added the title to your library and have an active PS Plus membership. You need an Extra or Premium membership, and the title must still be in the service.
Can a title leave? The monthly offer is a window to add the game. Once added, it remains associated with your library, but play still requires active membership. Yes. Catalog titles can have an end date and leave the service.
Best suited to Claiming the month’s included games for access while subscribed Choosing from a larger subscription library that changes over time

These details describe PlayStation’s US plans and support pages; benefit names or availability may differ by territory. Check your local PlayStation Plus page for the terms that apply to your account. PlayStation’s US games and plans page and PlayStation Support’s monthly-games instructions explain the benefits and access conditions.

What happens when you add a Monthly Game?

Adding a Monthly Game means adding it to your PlayStation game library; it does not mean you have bought the game outright. PlayStation Support describes monthly games as available to download and play “at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership.” You need an active membership to play, and you must add the title during the period it is offered. The monthly selection changes, so check the offer and claim any titles you want while they are available.

In practical terms, the library addition and the right to play are separate: the game is added to your account library, while access to play depends on your membership remaining active. PlayStation’s instructions for adding and downloading monthly titles are in its official support guide.

How the Game Catalog works

The Game Catalog is a service library, not a collection of permanent claims. With Extra or Premium, you can choose from the titles currently offered in the catalog. Sony may set an end date for a game, after which it is removed; having Extra or Premium does not guarantee continuing access to a particular catalog title.

Most games in the libraries can be downloaded, according to PlayStation Support. Streaming is subject to additional eligibility and availability conditions, so don’t assume every catalog game can be streamed or accessed on every device. Check the listing for the particular game and your region. PlayStation’s US catalog page includes catalog and removal information.

Which PS Plus tier includes each benefit?

Plan Monthly Games Game Catalog Other relevant benefits
Essential Yes No Core PS Plus benefits
Extra Yes Yes Essential benefits
Premium Yes Yes Extra benefits, plus the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming for supported games and locations

The plan distinction is straightforward: upgrading from Essential to Extra is what adds the Game Catalog. You do not need Extra or Premium just to receive Monthly Games. Premium adds separate benefits; the Classics Catalog and game trials are not the Game Catalog, and streaming availability has its own restrictions. See the PlayStation plan comparison and PlayStation Plus support page for the US benefit breakdown.

Which one should you care about?

  • Choose Essential if you want the monthly selections and core membership benefits, but do not need an on-demand catalog.
  • Consider Extra if you want both Monthly Games and access to the changing Game Catalog.
  • Consider Premium if you also value its separate Classics Catalog, trials, or supported streaming features.

The key trade-off is continuity: Monthly Games you add remain in your library but require an active membership to play; Game Catalog access depends on both a qualifying plan and the individual title remaining in the service. For catalog games you especially want to finish, check their availability before relying on continued access.
