Scammers may get details from a data breach or from public sources such as social media; accurate personal information does not authenticate the sender. The safest response is to ignore the message’s links and contact details, then verify the request through an official channel you find independently.
Why a phishing message may know personal details
A data breach is unauthorized access to information held by an organization. Stolen details can be reused in emails, texts, or calls, including messages impersonating the organization that was breached. Scammers may also exploit news of a breach by sending fake requests to “verify” an account or report supposed fraud. A convincing fake site may collect anything you enter, while some messages try to deliver malware.

Not every personalized message comes from a breach. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) explains: “Criminals use information about you that’s available online (including on social media sites) to make their phishing messages more convincing.” A scammer may combine public information with details from other sources, or use a breach story to make a generic attack seem relevant.
What to check before responding
Focus on what the message wants you to do, not whether it looks polished. The Federal Trade Commission’s useful first question is: “Do I have an account with the company or know the person who contacted me?” A “yes” is a reason to check through a trusted channel—not proof that the message is genuine.

- Pressure: Does it demand immediate action, threaten a penalty, or try to provoke fear, excitement, or scarcity?
- Sensitive requests: Does it ask for a password, banking or identity information, a one-time code, or a payment?
- A route to action: Does it ask you to click a link, open an attachment, scan a QR code, sign in, or call a number included in the message?
- Unexpected contact: Were you expecting this request, and does the claimed sender or service make sense in context?
Spelling mistakes can be a clue, but they are not required: scammers can use convincing language and branding. The NCSC’s guidance on recognising suspicious messages describes common pressure tactics and recommends checking through a route separate from the message.
How to verify the request safely
- Do not use the message’s route. Don’t click its link, scan its QR code, open an attachment, reply, or call a number it supplies.
- Open a channel you already trust. Use the organization’s official app, type its established web address yourself, or find its official contact details independently.
- Check the request there. Look for the same alert or contact the organization using a number from a payment card, statement, or independently located official site.
- Decide based on the verified account or organization. If it confirms no such request exists, treat the message as a scam. If you cannot verify it, do not provide information or payment through the message.

What to do with a suspicious message
If you have not interacted with it, do not reply. Report it using your email or mobile provider’s built-in reporting feature, then delete it. Reporting routes vary by country:
- United Kingdom: The NCSC says users can forward suspicious emails to its reporting address, including when they are unsure. Its reporting page recorded 454.8k scam URLs removed cumulatively as of July 2026; this is an operational total, not a count of phishing messages or victims.
- United States: The FTC advises forwarding phishing texts to 7726 and reporting scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Its phishing guidance also lists the Anti-Phishing Working Group for suspicious emails.
If you already clicked, shared information, or opened a file
Respond to what happened, using the organization’s official app, website, or independently sourced phone number—not the message’s contact details.

- You shared bank or payment details: Contact your bank promptly and follow its instructions for securing the account or payment method.
- You entered a password: Change it immediately through the official account site or app. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and use the service’s official recovery process if you may have lost access.
- You shared identity or other financial information in the United States: Use the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery guidance. Other countries have different reporting and recovery routes.
- You installed software or opened a suspicious file: Use your device’s security tools and seek trusted technical support if needed.

Use a unique password for every account. A password manager can help create and store distinct passwords, reducing the chance that one stolen password unlocks other services. Where an account supports multi-factor authentication (MFA), enable it; prefer phishing-resistant options when available.

The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends password managers and FIDO-based authentication. Its Mobile Communications Best Practice Guidance, dated December 18, 2024, identifies hardware-based FIDO security keys as the most effective option where feasible and passkeys as an acceptable alternative. Availability and account-recovery choices differ by service. These protections can limit harm from stolen credentials, but they do not tell you whether a particular message is genuine.
