Choose based on the server’s primary job: use Proxmox VE when it will be a dedicated virtualization host, or Unraid when it will primarily be a NAS and application server that also runs Home Assistant. Both can run Home Assistant OS (HAOS) in a virtual machine. Unraid additionally offers a Docker-container route, but that is a different operating model without Home Assistant’s Supervisor and add-ons.

For most installations, run HAOS in a VM. Home Assistant says, “The Home Assistant Operating System is the recommended installation type for most users.” The documented VM minimum is 2 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs and UEFI boot; those figures cover the Home Assistant guest, not the host, storage services or other workloads.

Quick verdict: match the platform to the job

If your server is mainly… Better starting point Why
Several virtual machines, test environments and isolated services Proxmox VE It is a bare-metal virtualization environment built around KVM virtual machines and LXC containers.
Shared storage, a media or file server, Docker applications and a few VMs Unraid Its documented model combines storage, Docker containers and virtual machines in one host.
A managed Home Assistant installation with Supervisor, apps, backups and one-click updates HAOS in a VM on either platform The guest operating system supplies Home Assistant’s integrated management layer.
A self-managed Docker deployment with your own update and backup process Home Assistant Container on either platform You control the operating system and container runtime, but Home Assistant apps and the Supervisor are not included.

There is no evidence here for a universal speed, reliability or power winner. The practical distinction is architecture: Proxmox puts virtualization first; Unraid puts storage and applications first.

What Proxmox VE and Unraid actually provide

Proxmox VE: a virtualization-first host

Proxmox VE installs directly on the server as a bare-metal environment based on Debian GNU/Linux. Its platform combines QEMU/KVM virtual machines with LXC system containers, so the machine becomes a host for separate operating systems and services rather than a conventional desktop Linux installation.

The installer uses the selected machine and can remove existing data on the disks you choose. Treat installation as a rebuild: copy off any files you need, identify the target disks, and decide your storage layout before booting the installer. Proxmox’s ISO can be copied to a USB flash drive or optical disc for installation media.

This design is well suited to a lab where Home Assistant is one guest among many: a second Linux VM, a Windows test VM, network services or disposable experiments can be kept separate and started, stopped or backed up independently.

Unraid: storage and applications first

Unraid documents a combined model of storage, Docker containers and virtual machines. A single host can therefore hold your files, run containerized applications and provide a full operating-system VM for Home Assistant OS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its Docker documentation specifically includes Home Assistant as a container workload. That does not turn a container into HAOS: a Home Assistant Container deployment does not provide the Supervisor or Home Assistant apps. If you want the managed Home Assistant experience, create a VM and install HAOS there, just as you would on Proxmox.

Choose the Home Assistant installation type before choosing the host

Home Assistant OS in a virtual machine

HAOS is the default choice for most home labs because the guest includes Home Assistant’s operating system, Supervisor, supported apps, backup features and integrated update workflow. The Linux virtual-machine guide specifies at least 2 GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs and UEFI firmware for the VM. These are documented minimums, not a promise that every busy installation will remain responsive at that size.

Allocate additional resources when your automations, history database, dashboards, cameras or add-ons grow. Reserve memory and CPU for the host itself and for every other VM, container and storage service; assigning the Home Assistant minimum does not size the whole server.

Home Assistant Container

The container installation is for readers who deliberately want to manage the underlying Linux system and container runtime. You are responsible for installing Docker or another supported runtime, applying operating-system and image updates, arranging backups and supplying services that HAOS would normally manage through its apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Container can be sensible when you already operate a carefully maintained Docker stack and value direct control over networking, volumes and image versions. It is the wrong shortcut if you expect the Supervisor, one-click add-on installation or the HAOS backup workflow.

Running HAOS on Proxmox

Use this sequence when Home Assistant is one of several guests on a dedicated virtualization server.

  1. Plan the host. Back up existing data, verify CPU virtualization support, choose the installation disk and decide where VM storage and backups will live.
  2. Install Proxmox VE. Boot the installer from prepared USB media, select the intended target disk and complete the network and administrator settings. Assume selected disks will be erased.
  3. Prepare HAOS media. Obtain the current Home Assistant Linux virtual-machine image and keep a separate copy of your configuration backups.
  4. Create a VM. In the Proxmox management interface, create a guest with UEFI firmware, allocate at least 2 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs, attach the HAOS disk image and connect a virtual network adapter.
  5. Start and finish Home Assistant setup. Boot the VM, wait for Home Assistant to initialize, then complete onboarding from another device on the assigned network address.
  6. Set a backup destination. Keep VM backups on storage that is separate from the guest’s active virtual disk when possible, and periodically copy important backups off the server.
  7. Add hardware deliberately. If Home Assistant needs a USB radio, serial adapter or another physical device, research passthrough for the exact host hardware and Proxmox version before buying it. The platform documents do not establish compatibility for every device.

Proxmox’s separation makes snapshots, cloning and test VMs convenient, but every extra guest consumes CPU, memory and storage. Do not allocate the entire machine to Home Assistant if the purpose of the host is to run a lab.

Running Home Assistant with Unraid

HAOS as an Unraid VM

  1. Install Unraid on its designated boot device. Preserve any data you intend to keep and confirm which disks will form the array or other storage pools.
  2. Build the storage foundation. Create the shares and backup locations that will hold VM images, application data and Home Assistant exports.
  3. Create a virtual machine. Use Unraid’s VM controls, select UEFI firmware, provide at least 2 GB RAM and 2 vCPUs for HAOS, attach the Home Assistant virtual disk and connect networking.
  4. Complete onboarding and backups. Open Home Assistant after first boot, configure integrations and test that an exported backup can be restored.
  5. Pass through devices only after validation. USB controllers, radios and other hardware can require specific IOMMU groups or controller assignments. Confirm the exact device and motherboard combination rather than assuming every adapter will work.

Home Assistant as an Unraid Docker container

Unraid can run Home Assistant as a Docker container, which may appeal to an existing container administrator. You must supply the container’s persistent storage, network configuration, restart policy, update schedule and backup method. The container route does not include the Home Assistant Supervisor or its app catalog, so follow Home Assistant’s container-specific documentation and check integration requirements before migrating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resource planning: the VM minimum is not the server minimum

Resource Home Assistant VM baseline What the host budget must also cover
Memory 2 GB RAM, documented minimum Proxmox or Unraid overhead, file-system caching, Docker containers, other VMs, storage services and growth headroom
CPU 2 vCPUs, documented minimum Hypervisor work, NAS tasks, encryption, databases, cameras and simultaneous guests
Firmware UEFI required by the Home Assistant Linux VM guide Host firmware settings, virtualization extensions and any IOMMU requirement for passthrough
Storage Virtual disk sized for the installation and its history Host operating system, VM images, snapshots, backups, Docker layers and user files
Networking Virtual network interface Physical NIC capacity, bridges or virtual switches, VLANs and any dedicated interfaces for storage

Start with the documented minimum only for a small installation and monitor memory pressure, CPU wait and database growth. Increasing the guest later is preferable to starving the host and causing every service to compete for resources.

Current licensing and subscription costs

The prices below are the published figures checked in 2026. They can change, so verify the vendor pages immediately before purchase. Proxmox amounts are in euros, charged per occupied CPU socket; Unraid amounts are in US dollars and are one-time license prices unless noted.

Product or tier Published price What the term means
Proxmox Community subscription €120 per year per occupied CPU socket Optional subscription listed for home labs, technical learning and other non-production use; it is not required to run Proxmox VE.
Proxmox Basic €370 per year per CPU socket Paid service tier with support and repository benefits; net price, with VAT potentially added.
Proxmox Standard €550 per year per CPU socket Higher support and repository service tier.
Proxmox Premium €1,100 per year per CPU socket Highest listed support tier.
Unraid Starter $49 one time License for up to six storage devices, with one year of updates.
Unraid Unleashed $109 one time Unlimited-device tier, with one year of updates.
Unraid Lifetime $249 one time Unlimited-device tier with lifetime updates.
Unraid update extension $36 per year for Starter or Unleashed Optional updates extension; Unraid describes the underlying license as perpetual, so this payment concerns updates rather than continued ownership.

Do not treat the euro and dollar figures as an exchange-rate comparison, and do not add VAT to a Proxmox figure unless your purchase jurisdiction requires it. A Proxmox subscription buys service entitlements, while an Unraid license determines device limits and update entitlement.

Installation, migration and backup practices

Before replacing an existing server

  • Export a tested Home Assistant backup and store a copy away from the machine you are about to reinstall.
  • Inventory USB radios, serial devices, network adapters and disks; record which integration uses each one.
  • Decide whether the host will also provide file storage. A platform change can alter paths, permissions, network names and backup destinations.
  • Confirm that your CPU supports hardware virtualization and that the motherboard firmware exposes the settings your chosen passthrough design needs.
  • Reserve capacity for the host, not just the 2 GB/2-vCPU Home Assistant VM minimum.

After the first boot

  • Update the host and Home Assistant guest through their normal maintenance paths.
  • Make one small configuration change, create a backup, and perform a restore test before migrating all automations.
  • Monitor free storage, memory pressure, CPU contention and backup completion.
  • Keep a recovery copy of the VM or Home Assistant backup on another device or location.

Snapshots are useful before risky changes, but they are not a complete backup strategy. A snapshot on the same failed disk disappears with that disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using Home Assistant to monitor Proxmox

Home Assistant provides a Proxmox VE integration that can monitor nodes, virtual machines and containers and, where permissions allow, expose control actions. Create a dedicated Proxmox user with only the permissions the integration needs. The documentation also describes API tokens as an option. Do not reuse a full-administrator account in Home Assistant when a narrowly permissioned account will work.

  • Home Security System - Record and monitor your property 24/7 with support for multiple IP cameras and remote viewing
  • 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates

This integration is a convenience for dashboards and alerts; it does not make Proxmox a better or worse host for Home Assistant. Unraid can likewise be monitored through its available integrations and services, but the platform choice should still follow your storage-versus-virtualization priority.

Common pitfalls and how to recover

Installing on the wrong disk

Both a bare-metal rebuild and a storage-platform setup can destroy data when disks are selected incorrectly. Stop before installation, label disks by serial number, and maintain an external backup. If data is already overwritten, power down and use a specialist recovery workflow rather than repeatedly writing to the disk.

Assigning only the VM minimum

A 2 GB, 2-vCPU guest can boot while the overall server remains overloaded. Reduce other guests, add host memory or increase CPU capacity after measuring contention. Do not hide host pressure by continually raising Home Assistant’s allocation while leaving no reserve for the platform.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting Container to behave like HAOS

If the Supervisor, apps or integrated backup flow is missing, verify the installation type before changing random settings. Restore to an HAOS VM when the managed experience is the requirement; stay with Container only if you accept responsibility for its operating system and runtime.

Assuming passthrough is universal

A USB coordinator or PCI device can depend on motherboard IOMMU groups, controller topology and platform configuration. Check the exact hardware combination and keep a network-based fallback where practical. The general platform descriptions do not certify a particular adapter.

Putting every backup on the host

Host-local VM snapshots and exports cannot protect against a failed disk, theft or a destructive configuration error. Keep at least one copy separate from the server and test restoration while the original system still works.

A decision checklist

  • Choose Proxmox VE if most of your planned workloads are independent VMs, you want a virtualization-centered administration model, and NAS duties are secondary.
  • Choose Unraid if shared storage is the foundation, Docker applications are central and Home Assistant is one service among many.
  • Choose HAOS in a VM unless you specifically want to maintain Docker, the host operating system, updates and backups yourself.
  • Budget the host around every workload; Home Assistant’s 2 GB RAM and 2 vCPU figures are the guest minimum, not a complete server specification.
  • Confirm disk-erasure risks, backup locations, UEFI boot and hardware-passthrough requirements before buying or installing.
  • Evaluate the published licensing terms in their stated currencies and billing intervals, and recheck prices before payment.

Bottom line

For a virtualization lab with Home Assistant as one guest, Proxmox VE is the more direct fit. For a NAS and Docker application server that also needs Home Assistant, Unraid is the more direct fit. In either case, HAOS in a UEFI VM provides the managed Home Assistant experience; use the Container route only when its extra maintenance is an intentional trade-off.
