Choose KVM/QEMU when a workload needs Windows, its own operating-system kernel, or virtual hardware. Choose LXC for Linux services that can share the Proxmox host’s kernel and benefit from a lightweight container environment. Proxmox VE supports both, so you can use the right guest type for each workload rather than forcing every service into one model.
What is the difference between LXC and KVM in Proxmox?
KVM/QEMU provides full virtual machines: each guest runs its own operating system on virtualized hardware, including virtual storage and network devices. Proxmox lists both Linux and Windows as possible guest operating systems. Its product documentation describes KVM as delivering near-native performance on supported x86 hardware with Intel VT-x or AMD-V.

LXC provides operating-system-level virtualization for Linux. A container creates an isolated environment for a Linux system or application, but shares the host’s Linux kernel. It is not a small, independent computer with its own kernel. Proxmox describes containers as a lightweight alternative to full machine virtualization because of that shared kernel.

Which should you choose for your workload?
| Requirement | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Run Windows as a guest | KVM/QEMU | A VM runs its own operating system on virtualized hardware; LXC shares the Linux host kernel. |
| Run a guest that needs its own kernel | KVM/QEMU | A virtual machine has a separate guest operating system and kernel. |
| Run a Linux service compatible with the host kernel | LXC | A container provides an isolated Linux environment while sharing the host kernel. |
| Keep virtualization lightweight for Linux services | LXC | Proxmox characterizes containers as a lightweight alternative to full machine virtualization. |
| Support a mix of these workloads on one platform | Both | Proxmox VE manages virtual machines and containers. |
This is an architecture-based decision aid, not a benchmark or a security certification. Before choosing, check whether the service needs kernel modules, particular devices, a non-Linux operating system, or a specific degree of isolation.
How do isolation and security differ?
An LXC container shares the host kernel; a KVM guest runs its own operating system on virtualized hardware. If an independent guest kernel or stronger separation is a firm requirement, KVM is the more suitable choice. That distinction does not guarantee that a VM is secure or that a container is unsafe. Security depends on the threat model, configuration, patching, and other safeguards. Proxmox’s cited product materials do not provide a quantitative comparison of escape risk.

Is LXC faster than KVM?
There is no universal speed figure established by the cited Proxmox materials. Proxmox characterizes KVM as near-native on supported hardware and LXC as lightweight, but the available sources do not provide directly comparable measurements for a specified workload. Avoid treating either description as a guaranteed performance advantage or a promise about RAM use.

Can you use LXC and KVM together?
Yes. A practical Proxmox setup can put kernel-compatible Linux services in containers and reserve VMs for Windows, workloads that need their own kernel, or services that require a full virtual machine environment. The platform provides a central web interface, with functionality also available through the command line and REST API.
Proxmox documents cluster features and migration for both virtual machines and containers. The applicable steps depend on the Proxmox release and configuration, so consult the documentation for the version you run before making a production change. A quick decision checklist
- Choose KVM/QEMU if you need Windows, a guest kernel, or a virtual machine with its own operating system.
- Choose LXC if you are running a Linux service that is compatible with the host kernel and fits an isolated container environment.
- Use both when some workloads can share the host kernel while others need a VM.
- Check requirements first for kernel modules, special devices, operating-system compatibility, and isolation needs.
