If your Android phone has a built-in microSD slot, installing a card there is the only option in this guide that can become ongoing phone storage. If it has no slot, a USB OTG card reader can provide access to files on a card while it is connected—but it does not add permanent internal capacity. First check the exact phone model and regional variant; slot availability, supported capacity, and storage modes vary.
Which method should you choose?
| Rank and method | Best for | Apps | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Built-in microSD slot, portable mode | Keeping photos, videos, and files on a card you can move between compatible devices | No | Requires a phone with a slot; formatting erases the card |
| 1. Built-in microSD slot, internal/adoptable mode | Files and apps, if the phone offers this mode | Yes, on supported devices | The card is tied to the phone; formatting erases the card |
| 2. USB OTG card reader | Browsing or transferring files on a microSD card with a phone that has no slot | Not equivalent to installed app storage | Requires a compatible phone, adapter, reader, and file handling; it is attached storage |
| 3. USB flash drive or other USB storage | Carrying or transferring files without a microSD card | Not equivalent to installed app storage | Uses the phone’s port while connected |
Portable and internal/adoptable storage behave differently: Android Help explains that portable cards are transferable, while internal storage can hold apps but is not intended to move between devices. Formatting or changing storage modes deletes data, so back up the card first. Google Android Help: Get started with an SD card.

1. Install a microSD card in the built-in slot
Check the exact phone before buying
Look up the full model number and the specification for the region where that variant was sold. Some Android phones have no microSD slot, and a model family name alone does not establish slot availability or capacity support. Manufacturers may also list different limits for regional variants. For example, Samsung’s capacity guidance is region-scoped: its UK table applies to models sold in the UK or Ireland and warns that specifications can differ by region. Samsung Support UK: SD card sizes and capacity.

Samsung defines microSD as up to 2 GB, microSDHC as up to 32 GB, and microSDXC as over 32 GB through 2 TB; those definitions do not mean a particular handset supports every card in a family. Samsung’s Canada support page lists limits for specific models, including some up to 1 TB, but those are Canada-specific examples, not a global guarantee. Match the card’s capacity and speed to the exact handset specification and your intended use. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its capacity and read/write capabilities. Samsung Support Canada: SD card compatibility and capacity.

Insert and set up the card
- Back up any files already on the card. Formatting erases its contents.
- Follow the phone’s instructions to open the tray or card slot and insert the microSD card. Do not force a card or tray; check the device guide for its orientation and slot configuration.
- Use the phone’s SD card setup prompt, or open its storage settings if no prompt appears.
- Choose portable storage for photos, videos, and files you may want to transfer to another device. If the phone offers internal or adoptable storage and you need app storage, review the trade-offs below before formatting.
Portable or internal storage?
Portable storage is the practical choice when you want to keep files on a removable card and transfer it to another compatible device. It does not install apps on the card. Internal, or adoptable, storage can support apps on devices that offer the feature, but the card becomes tied to that phone and is not meant for routine transfer. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage, so do not assume the option appears on every Android phone. Samsung Support Canada.
2. Connect a microSD card reader with USB OTG
If the phone has no card slot, a compatible USB OTG reader is the closest way to access files on a microSD card. Connect a reader that fits the phone’s port—often USB-C—and open a file manager to browse or copy files. Google says USB storage can be accessed with Files by Google on Android 7.0 (Nougat) and later; supported operations include browsing, copying, moving, renaming, and deleting files. Compatibility is not universal. It can depend on the phone, connector, reader, power requirements, and card file system. Samsung documents using a Type-A-to-Type-C adapter that supports USB OTG to connect a flash drive and transfer files on Galaxy devices, but that does not guarantee every adapter or reader will work with every phone. Samsung Support US: Use a USB Type-C cable or adapter with a phone or tablet.

A card connected through a reader remains external and attached. It can provide temporary access to files, but it does not become an installed SD card or permanent internal phone storage.

3. Use a USB flash drive or other USB storage
A USB flash drive works on the same general principle as a card reader: connect compatible storage to the phone and manage its files through a file manager. Files by Google documents USB storage access and file operations on Android 7.0 and later. This is useful for moving or carrying files, but it is not a way to install a microSD card or add internal capacity. The drive occupies the port while connected unless you use a compatible hub or adapter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you put apps on an SD card?
Only if the phone supports internal or adoptable storage and the card has been set up in that mode. Portable cards are for files and do not install apps. Adoptable storage ties the card to the phone; moving it to another device is not the same as transferring a portable card. Samsung says its Android devices do not support adoptable storage. Check the exact phone’s settings and manufacturer guidance rather than assuming the feature is available.
