Proton Pass and 1Password can both store and share credentials, but their documented plans and security features differ. Proton Pass offers a free option and a family plan for up to six users; 1Password is paid in the personal-plan material reviewed, and its Families plan can invite up to five family members. There is no evidence here to declare one universally better: choose based on plan fit, household sharing needs, and the features you will actually use.

These capacity descriptions are not identical: Proton says “up to six users,” while 1Password says it can invite “up to five family members.” Check each provider’s current plan terms before subscribing, especially if household size or the exact account-holder/member arrangement matters. What the vendors document about security
Proton Pass
Proton says Pass applies end-to-end encryption to more than passwords, including usernames and website addresses. Its security page also describes passkeys as cryptographic key pairs that support phishing-resistant sign-in. These are Proton’s descriptions of its product, not independent comparative verification.

1Password lists a Secret Key, Travel Mode, Watchtower alerts and encrypted storage among its features. These are distinct capabilities, not direct equivalents to the field-encryption and passkey claims described by Proton. The feature lists alone do not establish which service is more secure overall.

Sharing with family and people outside your account
Proton says paid Pass features include secure sharing of individual items with anyone, including people who do not use Pass. 1Password describes expiring links for short-term sharing with non-users. The services’ descriptions do not establish identical expiration rules, recipient controls, or plan eligibility, so check the current sharing settings and terms before relying on a particular workflow.

Which one should you choose?
Consider Proton Pass if
- You want to consider a password manager with a documented free option.
- A family plan described for up to six users is a better fit for your household.
- You value Proton’s stated approach to encrypting usernames and website addresses, or its passkey support across devices.
Consider 1Password if
- You want the documented Secret Key and Travel Mode features.
- Watchtower alerts and encrypted storage are features you want in the same plan.
- Shared family vaults, unlimited vaults, or guest access for limited information match how your household needs to organize access.
