What storage compatibility means
In a conventional proxy setup, the proxy retains state while delegating execution to an implementation contract. The new implementation must interpret the proxy’s existing storage in the same way as the old one. For conventional layouts, preserve the order and types of existing state variables, and add new variables after the existing ones. Changing a type, reordering variables, or inserting a variable between existing ones can shift how stored values are read. Storage compatibility is necessary, but not sufficient: it does not by itself establish that new logic behaves correctly, that initialization is safe, or that an upgrade is authorized.

How to review a proposed implementation upgrade

Identify the exact deployment
Record the protocol and network, proxy address and pattern, current implementation address, proposed implementation, upgrade authority, and every migration or initialization call. Confirm that the source or build artifacts correspond to the deployed bytecode. Do not rely on version labels alone.

Build both versions with storage-layout information
Compile the current and proposed implementations with build information that includes storage layout. The comparison must use the actual prior implementation as its reference; choosing an unrelated or assumed baseline can produce an irrelevant result.

Run upgrade validation against the prior implementation
OpenZeppelin’s upgrade tooling provides validation commands and programmatic APIs for checking upgrade safety and storage compatibility. Its documentation warns that a reference contract is required for storage comparisons and that incompatibilities may not be reported without one. Use the exact prior implementation as that reference. Inspect the diff, not just the validation result
Review changes to variable order and types, inserted variables, inheritance, and assumptions about existing state. Confirm that new state is appended under a conventional layout, and determine whether any migration logic expects values or invariants that the old deployment does not guarantee.

Review initialization and implementation safety
In a proxy context, initializer functions take the place of constructor setup for proxy state. Check that initialization runs in the intended context, cannot be improperly repeated, and sets all required state. OpenZeppelin also cautions against using

Test the exact upgrade and migration path
Use representative prior state and execute the same sequence of authorization, upgrade, and migration calls intended for deployment. Check that balances, ownership, roles, accounting, and other application invariants remain correct, and exercise relevant failure and rollback behavior. A clean storage-validation result does not replace this behavioral testing.

Verify upgrade authority and governance evidence
Inspect the deployed contracts and current governance records to establish who can authorize an upgrade, what approvals are required, and whether the proposed action has actually been approved. General claims about governance do not prove the controls of a particular deployment.
What evidence would support a Gate-specific verdict?
- The precise Gate project or entity intended by the title, plus the relevant chain or network.
- Proxy and implementation addresses for the current deployment, along with verified source or matching build artifacts.
- The proposed implementation and its upgrade, initializer, and migration calls.
- A storage-layout comparison and validation output using the correct prior implementation as reference.
