Determine an API change’s impact by comparing the current and proposed contracts, finding which consumers rely on the affected behavior, and estimating the work and risk of migration. A change that looks small in a server implementation can still break independently released clients. If existing consumers cannot continue to work reliably, treat the change as breaking and plan versioning, transition support, and communication.
Start with the contract consumers actually use
An API is a contract between a service and its consumers. Its impact is not limited to whether an endpoint still exists: clients may depend on request and response fields, data types, requiredness, error behavior, and what an operation means in practice.

Record the currently published contract and the proposed one, including the API version, specification format, and relevant runtime behavior. If you publish an OpenAPI description, keep it under version control as a comparison baseline. OpenAPI descriptions can also support documentation, code generation, and testing workflows, but a schema comparison alone cannot establish that runtime behavior or semantics remain compatible. See the OpenAPI Specification.

Compare the two contracts and inspect the implementation or observed behavior where a specification may not tell the whole story. Pay particular attention to:
#1 Best Overall
- Contains one (1) API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT 800-Test Freshwater Aquarium Water Master Test Kit, including 7 bottles of testing solutions, 1 color card and 4 tubes with cap
- Helps monitor water quality and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish and cause fish loss
- Accurately monitors 5 most vital water parameters levels in freshwater aquariums: pH, high range pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
- Designed for use in freshwater aquariums only
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
- Removed or renamed operations, parameters, or fields.
- Changed field types, requiredness, or accepted request values.
- Changed response shapes or error contracts.
- Changes to the behavior or meaning of an existing operation.
- New request requirements that older clients do not meet.
Compatibility depends partly on consumer behavior and your published policy. For example, some clients ignore unfamiliar response fields while others reject them. Microsoft’s REST API Guidelines say services should explicitly define what they consider a breaking change, including how they handle new JSON response fields and API arguments. The linked guidance is on a versioned vNext path labeled deprecated, so treat it as guidance rather than a universal current mandate: Microsoft REST API Guidelines, section 12.3.
Find the consumers and estimate the work
Map known consumers to the parts of the contract they use. Include internal services, public clients, generated SDKs, and integrations where relevant. Identify client owners and release cadence; a dependency that cannot be updated promptly can make an otherwise manageable change high risk. GOV.UK advises API teams to understand the systems and dependencies consumers must manage, as well as the time they need to adapt: Managing your API beta.
Rank #2
- Contains one (1) API NITRITE TEST KIT 180-Test Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Test Kit, including 1 bottle of testing solution, 1 color card and 1 test tube with cap
- Helps monitor nitrite and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately detects high nitrate levels from 0-5 ppm
- Prevents high levels of nitrite which inhibit fish respiration and suppress their immune systems
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
Use available consumer inventories, client identification, or usage telemetry to inform the assessment. An empty list of reports is not proof that no consumers exist, and there is no single telemetry method suitable for every API.

- Helps monitor and adjust ammonia level and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately reads ammonia 0 - 8 ppm (mg/L)
- Fish continually release ammonia and uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to water
- Use several times a week when starting a new aquarium then weekly or when problem arise
Test old-client behavior against the proposed change
Use a compatibility checker or contract diff to identify structural changes, then test behavior that matters to real consumers. Run contract tests and, where available, consumer-driven tests against the proposed provider behavior. Cover error responses and relevant edge cases, not just successful requests. Also confirm that the published machine-readable description matches the deployed API. The appropriate test matrix depends on the API and its consumers.
Compare release paths before choosing one
Choose the least disruptive path that meets the product or operational need. Compare the options against consumer breakage, the reach and criticality of affected workflows, migration lead time, ongoing support burden, and communication clarity.

- Contains one (1) API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT 550-Test Saltwater Aquarium Water Test Kit, including 6 bottles of testing solution, 1 color card and 4 test tubes with cap
- Helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish and cause fish loss
- Accurately monitors 4 most vital water parameters levels in saltwater aquariums: high range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate

- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
| Release path | When it fits | Impact to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible extension | The goal can be met without preventing supported clients from making requests or interpreting responses correctly. | Check that consumers with stricter parsing or validation still behave as expected; define compatibility policy for additions. |
| New API version | The change cannot preserve the existing contract for all supported consumers. | Plan the new contract, migration sequencing, and the cost of running and supporting versions in parallel. |
| Deprecation and removal | Consumers need a transition before an old contract is withdrawn. | Communicate what changes, when support ends, how to upgrade, and what support remains during migration. Set timing based on consumer needs; there is no universal grace period established by the cited guidance. |
Microsoft advises making changes backward compatible where possible. If a breaking change is unavoidable, version the contract according to the API’s documented policy and give consumers a workable upgrade path. The Australian Government guidance uses MAJOR for incompatible or breaking changes, MINOR for backward-compatible functionality additions, and PATCH for backward-compatible fixes; those labels describe that policy, not a universal rule for every API.

Document the affected contract elements, known consumers, test results, estimated migration work, chosen release path, and communication plan. State the compatibility policy used to reach the decision—especially for additions that may affect strict clients—and note any uncertainty about unknown consumers. That gives maintainers and client owners a concrete basis for deciding whether to proceed, adjust the change, or allow more transition time.
