To limit what people can see or do on Discord, change several independent controls: Profile Privacy, Activity Sharing, server DMs, friend requests, Message Requests, sensitive-content filters, and data-use options. A private profile does not block contact, and turning off activity sharing does not hide profile details. Discord’s current help pages, accessed October 7, 2026, document the settings below; labels, defaults, and availability can vary by platform, age group, region, and rollout.
Make your Discord profile visible to a smaller audience
On desktop, browser, or mobile, open User Settings > Data & Privacy > Profile Privacy. Discord offers three audiences for your full profile:

Discord says the setting can hide details such as your custom status, pronouns, badges, connected accounts, bio, widgets, and wishlists from people outside the selected audience. It does not make you anonymous: your avatar, banner, display name, username, server tag, account age, and mutual friends and servers remain visible. See Discord’s Profile Privacy Setting guide.

Profile Privacy only governs profile visibility. It does not stop someone from sending a friend request or DM; those permissions are separate.
Hide game and account activity separately
Open User Settings > Activity Privacy or the Activity Sharing controls shown in your app. Discord documents a global activity-sharing switch, audience defaults, and server-specific controls. You can choose Friends Only, Friends & Small Servers Only, or Friends & All Servers, and supported games or connected accounts may have their own sharing controls. Check the current Activity Sharing FAQ if the labels or route differ in your version.

Turning sharing off for one server does not necessarily hide your activity from a person who is also your friend or shares another server where sharing is allowed. Discord documents the 200-or-fewer-member threshold for small servers. Its default audience can depend on age group and region; defaults are not a guarantee that a particular account has a particular setting.
Limit who can DM you or send friend requests
Turn off server DMs
Discord says that, by default, people who share a server may be able to DM you. On desktop or browser, open User Settings > Content & Social > Social permissions; on mobile, open Settings > Content & Social. Turn off server DMs globally or adjust the permission for an individual server. The Blocking & Privacy Settings guide describes the available controls.

Choose who can send friend requests
Under Content & Social > Friend Requests, Discord lists Everyone, Friends of Friends, and Server Members. Turn off the categories you do not want. Deselect all three to prevent users from sending you friend requests through those options.
Decide how to handle Message Requests
Message Requests are distinct from the permission to receive server DMs. Discord says requests are on for everyone by default. Adults can turn them off globally or for a specific server; teens and users whose age group is unconfirmed cannot turn them off until adult age-group confirmation. Discord’s Message Requests guide says requests from non-friends are routed to the request inbox, subject to mutual-friend and small-server exceptions for adults. You can preview text before accepting, but attachments cannot be opened and links appear as plain text.

Block a specific account when needed
Blocking is an individual action, not a substitute for reviewing broader permissions. Use it to address a particular account; use social permissions to change who can initiate contact under Discord’s listed conditions.
Set limits on sensitive images
Discord’s sensitive-content controls apply to detected image-based media, not text messages, voice, or calls. The choices differ by location: adults can choose to show, blur, or block detected sensitive images in DMs, with separate controls for DMs from friends and from others. In server channels, the documented choices are Show or Blur; blocking there is managed through each server’s safety settings. These filters are not a general-purpose content filter or a guarantee that every unwanted image will be detected. See Discord Sensitive Content Filters.

Understand what Discord’s data-use opt-outs change
Discord’s Data Privacy Controls hub points to data settings under User Settings > Privacy & Safety > How We Use Your Data. The hub lists separate controls for improving Discord, personalizing Discord, sponsored content, and profile privacy. The exact route may differ from labels in individual help articles, so look for the named control if your interface has changed. Start at Data Privacy Controls.
Use Data to Improve Discord
Turning this off means Discord says it will stop collecting new information about how you use or navigate Discord for the specified product-understanding and improvement purposes. Discord may continue using information collected while the setting was enabled. This account-based choice applies across devices; it is not a request to delete your data or a switch that disables all data processing. Details are in Data Used to Improve Discord.
Use data to personalize my Discord experience
Turning this off means account-specific information will no longer power the features Discord describes as recommending content or promotions. Discord says this does not affect access to conversations, voice channels, or other spaces. It is a personalization choice, not a control over who can see or contact you. Request a copy of your Discord data
If your goal is to inspect information associated with your account, Discord provides a data-package request process. The package is a ZIP of files and can include categories such as activity, messages, servers, and account data. Requesting it is an access method, not a privacy setting or an opt-out.
