Protect Express Routes with JWT Authentication in Node.js

A secure Express JWT flow depends on more than decoding a token: verify it against trusted keys and an explicit algorithm policy, validate its claims, then let protected handlers run.

To protect an Express route with a JSON Web Token (JWT), verify the token’s signature with trusted key material, allow only the algorithm your application expects, and check the claims required for your API before calling next(). A signed JWT is not encrypted: its payload can be read, so never put secrets in it.

How JWT authentication fits into an Express request

A JWT is a format for carrying claims between parties. A signature can let a verifier detect changes and confirm that a token was signed with the corresponding key; it does not hide the claims. For API authentication, the important boundary is verification: decoded data is not an authenticated identity until the signature and application-specific claims have been checked.

A typical login and request flow works like this:

  1. The client sends credentials to a login endpoint over HTTPS.
  2. The application verifies those credentials and issues an access token with a defined issuer, audience, subject, purpose, expiration, and signing-key policy.
  3. The client sends the token with a request using the delivery method chosen for its client and threat model.
  4. Express authentication middleware runs before the protected handler.
  5. The middleware verifies the token using trusted key material and an explicit algorithm allowlist, then validates required claims and token purpose.
  6. On success, the middleware attaches only the identity or authorization context the route needs and calls next(). On failure, it ends the request with an authentication response.

Invalid, expired, not-yet-valid, wrong-issuer, wrong-audience, or wrong-purpose tokens must not reach the protected handler. Client-facing errors should not reveal credentials, cryptographic details, or key information. HTTP status and error-body conventions are application-level choices; the security requirement is to deny access when verification or required claim checks fail.

Build a verification boundary, not a decode shortcut

JWT headers and payloads arrive as untrusted input. The token must not choose the algorithm, supply the key, or determine which issuer or audience the API accepts. RFC 8725 requires libraries to let callers specify supported algorithms and forbids using other algorithms for cryptographic operations; it also says each key must be used with exactly one algorithm. Configure the accepted algorithm and trusted key association in application policy, rather than trusting the token header. See RFC 8725, JSON Web Token Best Current Practices.

For an API access token, verify the cryptographic operation and validate the claims your token profile requires. In particular, check the expected issuer, intended audience, and expiration. Distinguish access tokens from other token types, such as password-reset or identity tokens, so a token minted for a different purpose cannot be substituted. OWASP’s JSON Web Token Cheat Sheet discusses these validation and revocation considerations.

  • Do not treat a decoded payload as authenticated. Decoding only parses data; it does not verify the signature.
  • Do not accept alg: none for ordinary signed-token authentication.
  • Do not allow algorithm/key confusion or trust a key supplied by the token.
  • Do not put passwords, API keys, or other secrets in a signed JWT payload.

These constraints define the implementation regardless of which JWT package you choose. The sources establish the security rules, not a tested package/version combination; check the API and supported options for the specific library version you adopt.

Place authentication middleware before protected handlers

Express middleware participates in the request-response cycle. It can inspect or change request and response objects; if it neither ends the response nor passes control or an error onward, the request can hang. Express documents this behavior in Using middleware and Writing middleware.

Use application-level middleware when a broad set of routes shares the same policy, or router-level middleware when the policy belongs to a particular group. Choose the narrowest scope that consistently protects every intended route. The middleware’s success path should call next() only after verification and required claim checks; its failure path should send an authentication response or pass a controlled error to the application’s error handler.

Keep the identity attached to the request minimal. A route should receive only the subject and authorization context it needs, not the raw token or unnecessary claims. Authorization remains a separate decision: successful authentication establishes who or what presented a valid token, while route policy determines whether that identity may perform the requested action.

Choose a signing-key topology that fits your system

With symmetric signing, the same secret is used to sign and verify tokens. Every service that verifies tokens must therefore be trusted with material capable of signing them. With asymmetric signing, the issuer holds the private signing key while verifiers can use a public key, separating those roles. Neither option is universally preferable: choose according to which components need to issue tokens and which can safely hold signing-capable keys.

Whichever topology you use, bind each key to the intended algorithm and issuer, protect signing keys as production secrets, and plan rotation. A rotation plan needs an overlap period in which verifiers can accept the old key for still-valid tokens, followed by retirement of that key; do not let an untrusted token select arbitrary key material.

Choose how clients send the token

Authorization header

Non-browser clients and many API clients commonly send a bearer token in an authorization header. This avoids browser cookie attachment behavior, but browser applications still need to consider exposure to script running in the page. A token accessible to injected script can be stolen; minimizing XSS risk remains important.

Cookie

Cookies can suit browser-based applications, but their automatic inclusion in requests makes cross-site request behavior and CSRF protection part of the design. Use deliberate cookie security attributes and HTTPS. A cookie marked Secure requires HTTPS. If Express is behind a reverse proxy, configure proxy trust correctly so secure-cookie behavior reflects the original HTTPS connection. Express covers cookie and proxy considerations in its session middleware documentation.

Neither transport removes the need for a threat model: header-based storage must account for script access, while cookies must account for cross-site requests. CORS is not authentication or access control. Express’s cors middleware documentation explains that CORS headers control whether browsers can read responses; they do not block non-browser clients from making requests.

Set token lifetime and refresh behavior deliberately

An access token’s expiration bounds how long a stolen token may remain usable if no other revocation mechanism exists. A shorter lifetime can reduce that exposure window, but requires clients to obtain fresh credentials more often. Refresh mechanisms add complexity and need their own protection and lifecycle rules. There is no universal expiration duration established by the cited guidance; choose one based on the API’s risk, client behavior, and revocation requirements.

Expiration is not immediate logout. A token that has not expired can generally continue to pass verification unless the application checks additional server-side state. If the system must disable an account, terminate a session, or invalidate a token before its expiry, it needs an explicit revocation or session strategy.

Choose between self-contained JWTs and server-backed sessions

Self-contained tokens can be verified across services without looking up a session on every request, but their state is harder to change after issuance. Server-side sessions make it easier to end a session or react to account changes, at the cost of maintaining and accessing session state. OWASP cautions that stateless sessions are not automatically simpler because revocation and state synchronization still have operational costs. Express’s session middleware documentation describes the alternative: session data is stored server-side while the cookie carries a session identifier.

If early invalidation is required while retaining JWTs, one option is a server-side denylist keyed by a token identifier such as jti, checked until that token’s expiry. This adds a lookup and state-management burden, so it should be used when the revocation need justifies the added operational work.

Harden the surrounding Express deployment

Token verification is only one part of production authentication. Use HTTPS, protect signing keys, and configure browser cookies and proxy trust deliberately where applicable. Protect login endpoints against repeated credential guessing and keep dependencies reviewed and current. Express’s production security guidance specifically calls out brute-force protection and dependency hygiene.

  • Keep authentication checks in front of every protected handler and test that unprotected routes are intentionally public.
  • Keep token purpose, issuer, audience, expiration, algorithm, and key policy explicit.
  • Return a generic authentication failure rather than exposing token-validation internals.
  • Do not rely on CORS, client-side checks, or token decoding as substitutes for server-side authorization.
