For a standalone Job, use .spec.ttlSecondsAfterFinished to define a time-based retention window. For Jobs created by a CronJob, configure successful- and failed-run history limits. Keep enough Job and Pod history to investigate failed sends before cleanup removes those in-cluster records.
First identify which resource owns the email run
A Kubernetes Job runs work to completion. A finished Job and its Pods commonly remain in the cluster so an operator can inspect status and logs. The TTL-after-finished controller does not automatically remove a standalone finished Job unless a TTL is configured or another owner-driven action cleans it up. Kubernetes Jobs documentation

Before choosing a cleanup setting, inspect the live resource, its owner references, and the manifest that creates it. A periodically run email task is not necessarily a CronJob: configure retention on the resource that actually owns or creates the Job.

Choose retention for a standalone Job
Set .spec.ttlSecondsAfterFinished on a standalone Job when a time-based retention window suits the troubleshooting need. The TTL-after-finished controller applies to Jobs whose status has a Complete or Failed condition; the timer starts when that condition is set. TTL-after-finished has been stable since Kubernetes v1.23. Kubernetes TTL-after-finished documentation
#1 Best Overall
Choose the interval by asking how long the team needs to inspect failed sends, retries, Job status, and application output. If those details must remain available longer than the Job itself, preserve them in external logs before cleanup.
When the TTL expires, the Job becomes eligible for cascading deletion, including dependent objects such as its Pods. Expiry is not a promise that deletion happens at an exact second: Kubernetes honors object lifecycle guarantees, including waiting for finalizers. Kubernetes finalizers documentation

Timing caveats
- On Kubernetes v1.31 and later, the Job controller delays the terminal
CompleteorFailedcondition until all Job Pods have terminated. Because the TTL timer begins from that condition, this changes when TTL eligibility begins. Kubernetes Jobs documentation - TTL timing uses timestamps recorded in Job objects and can be affected by clock skew between cluster components.
- If a TTL has already expired, increasing its value does not guarantee the Job will be retained, even if the update succeeds. Set the desired retention before expiry and keep separate diagnostic records when they must outlast the Job.
Set count-based history for CronJob runs
For a scheduled email workload, configure retention on the owning CronJob with .spec.successfulJobsHistoryLimit and .spec.failedJobsHistoryLimit. The current Kubernetes documentation gives defaults of three successful finished Jobs and one failed finished Job. These are separate count limits, not time windows; setting either limit to zero retains none of that class. Set explicit values when the defaults do not provide enough troubleshooting history. CronJob | Number of finished Jobs retained | Separate limits for successful and failed Jobs; documented defaults are three and one, respectively |
Keep cleanup separate from email deduplication
CronJob scheduling is approximate. Kubernetes documents that circumstances can lead to multiple or missed Job creations, so the email task should be idempotent: repeated execution should not send an unintended duplicate message. Cleanup settings control how long finished Jobs remain; they do not prevent duplicate execution or provide deduplication. Kubernetes CronJob documentation

Make the retention window match the diagnostic plan
Finished Pods are often kept so operators can inspect their logs. Once cleanup removes the Job and its dependent objects, that in-cluster evidence may no longer be available. Decide how quickly failures must be investigated, retain Job history accordingly, and send required output to durable external logging before the cleanup window closes. The Kubernetes documentation explains the Job and TTL lifecycle; it does not prescribe a universal retention interval for email workloads.
