To turn up a projector’s volume, check that the projector, source device and any connected speaker are not muted, then raise the volume on both the projector and source. If sound still isn’t loud enough, route audio to compatible self-powered speakers using an output supported by your projector. The exact controls and connections vary by model.
Raise the volume on the projector and source
- Check mute. Make sure the projector, the source device (such as a computer or streaming device) and any connected speaker or sound system are not muted.
- Turn up the projector. Use its remote or onboard controls. Some projectors have a volume button on the remote; others put volume in the menus.
- Turn up the source device. Raise its volume too. HDMI or screen mirroring can route audio from a source or output you may not expect, so check the device that is actually playing the content.
Confirm where the audio is being sent
Make sure the projector’s audio output is set to the intended destination: its built-in speaker or the connected audio system. Menu names and choices differ by model. Epson’s guidance for some projectors places relevant options under Signal I/O or HDMI Link, but those paths are not universal. Check the manual for your exact model before changing settings.

Source-device settings can matter as well. Philips Projection’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the source’s audio output and, for the computer case it covers, raising the computer’s volume. It also describes setting HDMI audio to “Multichannel (Raw data) & Stereo (PCM).” Treat that as guidance for the situation Philips documents, not a setting to apply to every projector or source.
Use external speakers if the built-in sound is too quiet
If the projector’s built-in speaker cannot provide enough volume, compatible self-powered speakers or an audio system may be an option. Before connecting anything, confirm that the projector has an audio output or supported HDMI/ARC connection and that the speakers have a compatible input. Some setups require an appropriate cable or adapter; the correct one depends on the ports on both devices.

For example, Epson documents an Audio Out connection to self-powered speakers on the BrightLink EB-760Wi and says connecting external speakers disables that projector’s built-in speaker system. Epson also describes HDMI and HDMI ARC in its LS500W audio configuration. These are model-specific examples, not a guarantee that every projector supports the same connections or behavior. See Epson’s BrightLink EB-760Wi support FAQ, Epson’s LS500W support FAQ and Epson’s instructions for connecting external speakers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If there is still no sound or the volume will not change
- Recheck mute and volume on the projector, source and connected audio equipment.
- Verify that the source is sending audio to the output you intend to use.
- Confirm the projector’s selected audio output matches the built-in speaker or external system you want to hear.
- Check the model manual for supported ports, connection steps and menu labels; do not assume an HDMI, ARC or Audio Out port is available or behaves the same on every model.
If those checks do not resolve the problem, identify the projector model and source device before choosing a menu path, cable or speaker. Philips’ sound troubleshooting guidance also advises checking mute, source output and computer volume in the cases it addresses.
