There is no single correct distance for every home projector. The right lens-to-wall distance depends on the image width you want and the projector’s lens and zoom range. Estimate it with throw distance = image width × throw ratio, then confirm the placement using the exact model’s calculator or manual.
How to calculate projector throw distance
Throw ratio is the distance from the projector lens to the image surface divided by the image’s width. Rearranging that relationship gives a quick estimate:

Throw distance = image width × throw ratio
For example, ProjectorCentral explains that a 2.0 throw ratio needs 2 feet of throw for each foot of image width. This illustrates the formula; it is not a general placement recommendation for every projector. ProjectorCentral’s calculator guidance also defines short throw as a throw ratio of 0.4 or less.

Use image width, not diagonal size
The basic formula takes the image’s horizontal width, not its diagonal. If you know only the diagonal, first account for the intended aspect ratio to find the width, or enter the diagonal and aspect ratio in the manufacturer’s calculator or manual table. A different aspect ratio changes the width for the same diagonal. ProjectorCentral’s calculator and Epson’s projection-distance guidance provide model-oriented ways to check sizes.

Account for zoom
If the projector has an optical zoom lens, use its minimum and maximum throw ratios to see whether your intended distance and image size fall within the supported range. Zoom can change image size without moving the projector, but it does not make every distance possible. A fixed lens offers less placement flexibility. ProjectorCentral and Epson explain the importance of checking the lens range for the specific model.
Measure from the lens to the wall or screen
Measure from the projector lens to the wall or screen surface—not from the projector’s back panel, and not simply from one room wall to the other. Check the model’s documentation for any special measurement convention. Epson’s installation guidance and the model-specific documentation linked from it are the appropriate references for final placement.

Check whether the projector fits your room
- Choose the image size and aspect ratio. Decide how wide the projected picture should be. If you are starting from a diagonal screen size, use its aspect ratio to determine width or enter both values in the model’s calculator.
- Find the exact model’s throw ratio. Look for the ratio or minimum and maximum ratios in the manual or manufacturer’s calculator.
- Estimate the distance. Multiply the desired image width by the throw ratio. For a zoom lens, check whether your planned distance falls within the model’s minimum-to-maximum range.
- Measure available space from lens to surface. Include the actual lens position in your room plan, rather than treating the projector’s rear edge as the starting point.
- Confirm with the model-specific distance table or calculator. Epson’s guide lists distances for the particular models it covers and directs readers to its calculator for other sizes; those values are not universal. Check Epson’s guide or consult the documentation for your projector.

Place and support the projector correctly
- Keep it square to the image surface. Epson advises placing the projector directly in front of the screen rather than at an angle. Epson’s placement guide
- Use stable support. Set it on a sturdy, level surface or use a compatible mount, following the projector’s installation instructions. A ceiling installation requires a ceiling mount; check compatibility and the model’s fastening requirements rather than assuming a universal fit. Epson’s placement guide
- Keep vents clear. Do not block the projector’s air intake or exhaust areas. Follow the exact model’s ventilation guidance and place it within reach of a suitable power outlet. Epson’s placement guide
When a short-throw projector may help
If the room does not provide enough lens-to-wall distance for the desired image width, compare projectors by their supported throw ratios and zoom ranges. A short-throw model may work closer to the wall, but check its ratio against your room’s actual distance and intended image width.
