Pair the variation with a Gmail filter to label, archive, or otherwise handle matching mail automatically. It is a way to organize incoming messages, not a separate mailbox or a private address.
How Gmail plus addresses work
For a consumer address ending in @gmail.com, put a plus sign and a short tag before the domain: [email protected]. Google says messages sent to that variation arrive in the inbox for [email protected]. You do not need to create another account.

Use tags that are easy to recognize, such as +receipts, +news, or +shopping. Google gives [email protected] as an example for signing up for newsletters. The tag helps you identify mail addressed to that variation; it does not create a separate inbox.
Set up a filter for a plus-address variation
- Choose a variation. For example, use
[email protected]when providing your address to a service that sends receipts. - Start creating a filter in Gmail. Enter the full variation in the filter’s To field.
- Choose what happens to matching messages. For example, apply a label or archive the mail. Gmail’s filter actions can also include starring, forwarding, or deleting, depending on the available options in the filter workflow.
- Save the filter. Future messages matching that address variation will be handled according to the actions you selected.

Does a plus address hide your identity?
No: treat it as an organizational aid, not a privacy feature. Google warns that aliases are not private and may sometimes be visible to others. That warning appears in its broader alias guidance; it does not establish that every website or recipient exposes every plus tag in the same way. A plus variation still routes mail to your existing account, so do not assume it conceals who you are.
