Not always. A projector can work on a smooth, light-colored wall, and for casual viewing that may be enough. A dedicated screen becomes the more dependable choice once you need an even, consistent surface, control over contrast in a room with some daylight or lamp light, or a screen matched to a short-throw or ultra-short-throw (UST) projector. The real question is less “screen or no screen” and more whether your wall and room light will support the picture you want.
When an existing wall is enough
Samsung’s UK projector guidance says its projectors can be used on a smooth, light-colored wall, and its answer to “Do I need a screen for my home cinema projector?” is “No, it’s not always necessary to have a screen.” XGIMI’s screen-buying guide is more specific: a smooth, matte, white wall can work for casual viewing. Both statements describe suitability, not a promise that any painted wall will perform well.

Test the wall with the projector running in the room where you will watch, not just in daylight. Check for these problems:
- Texture: heavy roller texture, brush marks, or uneven patches can show up as a pattern across the image.
- Sheen: glossy or satin paint can create hot spots and reflections. Matte is the usual target.
- Color: tinted or off-white walls shift the color balance and reduce perceived brightness.
- Shape and obstructions: bulges, seams, outlets, window frames, or a corner cutting across the image all affect how the picture reads.
If the wall passes this check and you only watch occasionally, it is a reasonable starting point. If any of these problems appear, a dedicated surface is the practical fix.

When a dedicated screen is the better buy
A dedicated screen gives you a purpose-made, flat, consistent surface that can be sized and matched to the projector. It is the better choice when you are building a permanent theater, want the image size set by your seating layout rather than by whatever wall you have, or want a surface that will not show the wall’s imperfections.
Sizing the screen to the seats
Epson Europe offers general sizing examples, with the year not stated on the page. Treat them as illustrations rather than universal rules:

|---|---|---|
| Small living room | 50–100 inches | 1.5–3 m |
| Medium room | 100–150 inches | 3–5 m |
| Large home theater | 150–300 inches | 5–10 m |
Epson also presents a rule of thumb: the screen should fill roughly 30% to 50% of the viewer’s field of view. Use that as a check against your own seats. Epson describes short-throw projectors as typically around 1 to 2 m from the screen, but the exact throw distance for a given model comes from that model’s throw calculator or specification sheet.

Brightness and room light
Brightness targets vary by source. Samsung UK’s 2026 guidance recommends 1,500 to 2,500 lumens in a controllable home-theater environment, and 3,000 lumens or more where large windows affect viewing. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee of picture brightness, and they do not replace judging screen size and room light together.

ProjectorCentral’s 2026 buying guide cites a SMPTE target of 16 to 22 ft-L for a dark theater. It notes that home viewers may prefer a brighter image, so treat the figure as a reference point rather than a screen requirement.
Room light is the factor a screen cannot fix by itself. Legrand AV / Da-Lite explains that ambient light falling on a standard projection screen competes with the projector’s light and washes out contrast, color saturation, and dynamic range. Controlling the light, through blackout curtains, dimmer lighting, or darker wall colors, often does more for picture quality than buying specialized material.

Screen surfaces compared
| Option | Where it fits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Existing smooth, matte, light-colored wall | Casual viewing in a light-controlled room | Texture, sheen, and color variation are not controlled; no defined gain value |
| Matte white screen | Light-controlled dedicated room; XGIMI’s guide names matte white as the starting point | Balanced, uniform presentation, but it does not help with room light |
| Gray or contrast-enhancing screen | Rooms with some ambient light | May improve perceived contrast, with reduced white brightness as the trade-off |
| ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen | Ambient light that cannot be controlled | Preferred viewing angles can be narrower; the right design depends on where the light comes from and on projector throw |
| UST-specific ALR screen | Only a compatible UST projector setup | Designed differently from a conventional long-throw ALR screen because of the steep projection angle |
ALR is situational, not a universal upgrade. Legrand AV / Da-Lite distinguishes two categories. Contrast-based ALR surfaces block up to 80% of ambient light, according to the publisher’s description. True-optical ALR surfaces can block up to 99% of ambient light, but only from specific angles. The publisher says a screen qualifies as a “true ALR screen” at at least 80% ambient-light rejection; that is its own criterion, not a universal industry standard. XGIMI advises that ALR is generally unnecessary in a fully dark, dedicated room.

Screen gain compares a surface’s brightness to a reference board. Legrand AV / Da-Lite defines gain against a magnesium-oxide or magnesium-carbonate reference board: a 1.5-gain screen reflects 50% more light than that board, and a 0.8-gain screen reflects 80% of it. Gain also changes how the picture looks from seats off to the side.

ProjectorCentral’s 2026 guide gives a center-seat example: a 1.3-gain screen reflects about 1.3 times the incoming brightness toward a viewer sitting in the center. Gain does not mean every seat receives the same boost, so if your viewers sit across a wide area, compare gain together with the viewing-angle specification.
Choosing a screen format
| Format | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed frame | A dedicated room where a visible screen is acceptable | Held flat and always visible |
| Retractable (electric or manual) | A shared room where the screen should disappear when not in use | Concealed when stored; check flatness and projector compatibility before buying |
| Portable | Temporary or mobile viewing | Set up each time; check flatness and projector compatibility before buying |
A decision sequence
- Decide whether you want casual wall projection or a deliberate theater setup.
- Check the wall with the projector running at night, looking for texture, sheen, color, and obstructions.
- Identify the projector type and throw ratio before considering ALR or UST-specific material.
- Measure ambient light during the hours you actually watch.
- Measure the room, seating distance, and projector position, then use the manufacturer’s calculator for your model.
- Choose a format that suits the room: fixed, retractable, or portable.
- Compare gain and viewing angle together, especially if viewers sit across a wide area.
No single screen model is best for every room. The right answer depends on your projector model, throw distance, target image size, room light, seating layout, installation preference, and budget. No independent side-by-side test of wall paint against a screen in a specific room was identified, so the guidance above rests on manufacturer recommendations and general optical principles. Prices and stock change often, so check current listings once projector compatibility is settled.
